I am mad, but not that mad :wink:

We tried a winter camp at the 80-90 weekend up in Derbyshire.
We did enjoy it, but if it hadn't been for the pub it would have been a cold and uncomfortable evening. (Ok once in the sack of course :wink: )

Actually I was paraphrasing when I said £70.

I got a genuine Bosch one for £61 incl VAT from an outfit in Chester called "Euro Car Parts" :) ( note this is NOT the same as "Europarts" )

I wonder where one would get the parts from, bushes, brushes etc.

most auto electrical places keep bosch stuff on the shelf. I rebuilt my starter for less than a tenner.......and that included a new solenoid.

All the mechanical bits and the armature were fine, so I saw no point in throwing away good stuff for the sake of it.

Same with alternators, brushes for them are pennies, and regulators and diode packs are only a couple of quid

I had this problem prior to a gearbox replacement and thought the great "bush replacement" would solve it. However, the bush I took out was not significantly worn at all and having put the new box in, with new bush, I still have the starter problem. What I did notice when looking at the starter was that the pinion appeared to have a significant side-play in respect of the starter shaft and I did post a question as to whether or not there was, or shold be, a bush or bearing between the pinion and the shaft. I also noticed that the starter shaft cold be moved fairly easily from side to side and wonder if either or both of these factors might account for the intermittent engagement with the fly wheelwhich I still suffer from.

Having forked out on a recon box and the anguish of its installation it wold be nice to know in engineering terms if either of these factors is a factor if you see what I mean. Otherwise, I'm up for a cheap new starter

Well I would either re-con it yourself as mentioned above, or splash out £59 on a nice new one.

When I turn the key on mine now, it is so nice to here a clean, fast operation of the starter. It fires up on LPG so much faster with the increased turning speed, makes it feel altogether much "newer" and less like an old motor that struggles to fire up :)

I am really chuffed with the change :) :)
