diesel engines or petrol engines
this is prob in wrong place, sorry in advance
I was wondering if a diesel lump is worth getting?
I got a 1.9 dg at the mo, would I notice much difference?
and is £1900 good for a 'velle on a h plate
thanks in advance

I think what matters really, is that whatever engine you go for, it is in tip top condition... a bad 1.9 is just as much a dog as a bad 1.6TD although with the diesel you have the turbo as well that must be in at least reasoanblle nick.
The ideal petrol engine some might say is the Subaru two-point-two, which usually survive 100,000 miles with many more to go without trouble, but it isn't particularly cheap to do the conversion.
The ideal diesel might be one of the VW 1.9 TDs, but again, only if it is in very good condition to start with. If you find one that seems to run cleanly and wel, has a FSH (esp. regular oil changes) and has less than 100,000 on it, then that would be worth transplanting.
We all hope and pray that someone will discover a few hundred brand new engines sitting on pallets somewhere, sometime soon, and sold off suitably cheaply

Hi folks,
I could be guessing, but in another post KK says the mini has to go as she is looking at a caravelle.....
My non-technical take on the question was ....will I notice much difference between my DG vehicle (the camper - I know its a high top) and the diesel caravelle.
I think that is probably why it didn't start off in technical.
However, I could be wrong!!
Nice to see that as ever, there are people willing to give advice.

2.0 AGG (1997 ish) 1984 transporter LPG
2.0 AGG (1997 ish) 1984 transporter LPG
Just to clarify:
My camper has a 1.9 dg engine, all happy and dandy, keeping it.

The velle I'm looking at has a 1.d turbo diesel lump, has had reg oil changes seems ok on paper.

The mini has to be sold so I can buy said velle, husband will not let me have 3 vehicles. on ebay at mo.

Have to sell mini quick as going to have look at velle in the morning.
All donations gratefully received!!!
and yes becoming 2 van family, probably all going well. maybe. possibly.

Seems the 'velle you are looking at maybe a "Bus" and not a 'velle judging by the sticker on the front panel, the "bus" conversions left the factory as a kombi (Van with windows) and the interiors were built in this country by Devon or Advance, it should be badged as a transporter on the back.
Bare in mind that the interiors aren't usually as good as the earlier Caravelle.
1.6TD's are a good engine, but rarely serviced properly, once it's had a good going through and set up back to a state somewhere near where it left the factory they are really good engines, but suffer problems around the 100K mark.
But, I would have one of those any day over 1 wasserleaker, sorry wasserboxer.
Buy it, get the tappets set, the pump and cam timing done (with a new belt and tensioner) and have similar performance to a 1.9DG but revel in 30-35mpg without having to waste your underseat storage with a whacking great gas tank.

my diesel sprinter has done nearly 600 000 miles, and i would trust it to drive anywhere "no problem" try that in a petrol motor. like shakespear said" dg or not dg". if i wanted speed i`d be going for a lambourghini murcialago not a vw plumbers van.
so i think the answer has to be a resounding YES. after all if im not mistaken they stopped fitting petrol motors in trucks in 1936. . .for some reason.

true, but the sprinter design is 15 years newer
are the rice burners in transporters good for 600,000 ?
I've known as many folks have trouble with dervs as petrol
mind you these have been maimly used off road
and a Velle aint a plumbers van, the modern version, the T5 caravelle exec
is £41,000.........
And lets see the sprinter in 20 years time !
