Fluid is changed ... all seems fine, in fact better than before.

We'll see what 40 miles to work does to it ..................................

I'm paying the MOT place £20 to change the fluid. Lazy I know, but I've just saved the best part of £500 changing the head gasket myself so I'm indulging myself a little with this.

All sounds reasonable.

I think I'll change the fluid, then get the MOT station round the corner to do a brake check for me.

Sounds like it could be head gasket maybe.

Is that engine notorious for corroded head bolts?

Sounds serious whatever :(

Whatever you do, sort it out soon!

I kept putting off getting to the bottom of my water 'leak', just happily topping up the water when it was low, and I spent this week changing a head gasket!!!

A stitch in time and all that.

Bizarre brake failure (and miraculous cure) - Any ideas?

Had my brakes fail on the way home  20 miles into my journey the pedal went very spongy and very little happened. When I stopped (to change my underpants!) I realised I had been driving with the handbrake 2/3 on. The AA brought me home. An hour or so later I checked the vacuum hose was OK (it...

the gasket for a 1.6d golf engine is slightly different to the T25 - I have the oil all over my engine bay to prove it!

Make sure you have the engine number when you get the gasket to be sure.

My tank was leaking where the neck went into the seal ('83 diesel) and I took the seal out, cleaned it all up, and put it back in liberally coated with grease, and it hasn't leaked for nearly 2 years.

Maybe worth a try?

Can I upgrade my expansion tank?

I've just replaced the head gasket (biggest job I've done yet :) ), and I reckon the state of the 'radiator' cap (e.g. on the expansion tank) was a probable cause. Under pressure it lets water/steam out. It is the old metal type. I've bought a new tank with the new type of cap (with a spout) but can...

I had a similar thing - found a small split in a hose. Fixed that and found a small leak in the radiator. Replaced that, noticed when pressurised the radiator cap was letting steam out. Then the head gasket failed catastrophically!!!! Aiming to get it back together this weekend, and I'm also going t...

Can I put the cam followers straight back in.

1983 1.6d

The head is off to be skimmed - apparently the valves can stay in place.

If I put the followers back in the same place they came out of, will they need any measuring/setting up, or will nothing have changed so they'll be fine as they are?

Thanks
