[hr] My thoughts, l can’t see how black smoke that leaves soot that covers the back of the van is “not an issue” and I am not sure that overheating would cause it.  Did it have a significant shortage of coolant or boil over ,if not ,what do the garage think caused the overheating? Also make sure the earth stud is in good contact with steel it is fitted to, likely rusted !

Try cleaning up the earths below the ignition coil.

lastly, it might be worth changing the temp gauge sensor. This is located in the engine bay on the main coolant tank. It might be sending a false reading to the gauge. I was worried about mine last year as it seemed to be running ‘hot’ about 3/4 of the gauge. Changed the sensor this year and now it...

Yes 4 speed mechanism different to 5 speed. Could be that gearbox got changed to 5speed without also changing the gearstick mechanism.

Final drive ratio will differ  with different gearboxes and would  explain your issue. See if you can read the code on the bottom edge of the gearbox,below the reverse switch.
