I finally got around to wiring up my leisure battery, but have to confess I paid someone to do it for me. Loads of people gave me support and advice, but I justn't coudn't make the leap from reading about it and looking at diagrams to actually doing it. In the end I took it to an auto-electrician. It took him an hour to do it (so I guess it would have taken me at least a day!!). In the end he didn't go through the relay switch on the fuse box, he attached a split charge thingy (quite a meaty looking bit of kit) to the main battery, moved all the wiring off the main battery onto the leisure battery, except the main one to the starter/alternator. He put a 20a mini-blade fuse in-line next to the main battery and then connected them all up and tested them. Cost me £85

I quizzed him about it as he was doing it and he said he'd done hundreds on various campers and caravans. Reckoned that his way was the best because it was the most secure and advised me to stick plastic panels under the little battery covers behind the seats to avoid the risk of shorting.
We're off to France tomorrow for a month so it will be thoroughly tested and I'll report back on my return.
