JX faulty CCV breather?

Post by Woolf »

Hi all 8)

I'm trying to fault find my excessive oil consumption and wondered whether the breather valve on top of my valve cover may be the cause?

I can blow through it either way and there seems to be no restriction which doesn't seem right to me. Unfortunately I'm struggling to find a replacement for comparison.

The engine is a 1.6 JX and is consuming about 5L per 1000 miles

It's only done about 60,000 miles, doesn't leak, has a healthy turbo, starts quickly and pulls well, but there is always blue smoke which gets worse at speed.

It's a shame because it's a lovely van but I'm reluctant to drive it :(

it's a one way valve so sounds like it's foobarred - there's supposedly one on the shelf in Carlisle Van Centre 01228 511317, might not be there, otherwise try classic parts/heritage etc..your oil consumption matches a customer of mine who had the same problem, he cleaned the valve with wd40 and it started to work, but he replaced it with a new one for peace of mind, but that was on an AAZ rather than a JX

The ccv sounds normal,to check how much oil/vapor is going back down the breather tube i connected a bit of tubing with a coke bottle on the end to the ccv.
60000 miles seems very low milage is that van or engine?
I dont think, so I'm not[do I exist?]

Hmm, a vote each way - I need a third

It's only the engine that's got 60k, the van has nearly 600k 8)

I was thinking about doing the bottle test on the breather but I'm pretty sure that's where the oil is going anyway as it's collecting in the intake before the turbo.

is the camshaft fitted with the plastic cover?
are you sure the oil in the inlet isnt from the turbo?

No it has a metal cover, I didn't know there was a plastic one as well?

And yes quite sure about the turbo - I've already replaced a good one with an even better recon unit, and anyway the oil seems to be coming from before the turbo. I've had all the pipes off and cleaned them so that I could tell where it was starting and it seems to be from the breather.

What I'm now trying to work out is whether it's because the CCV is faulty or whether the engine is breathing to much oil mist for it to cope with?

The plastic cover sits ontop of the cam bearing caps, under the valve cover
how much oil vapor can you see coming out of the ccv[from mine its just air].

I haven't had the cover off so I don't know what's under there yet unfortunately.

If I disconnect the breather the air is blue - like an old car's exhaust.

Well..piston rings, valve guide seals,a compression test might tell you something but run a catch bottle to see how much oil is coming out of the ccv?

I'll do the bottle test asap, will a plastic one be ok? Not sure I like the idea of glass rattling around in the engine bay :?

Thanks for your help Dave 8)

I used a bit of green garden hose and a 500ml plastic water bottle and tied it to the fuel filter!
