T3 Rear Hub+Drum Modification Question.

Post by SplitBusVanatic »

Is a link to a man that modified his type2 Hubs to 5x130PCD (Porsche Fitment)
Here's the stock hub and modified hub side by side.
Image
I have emailed the guy.
What I want to know is this safe. ?
Can it be done ?

I am happy with the T3 rear drums. I can't justify changing rear hubs to 944 Brake setup also.
It is only a 1.6d after all. Maybe an AAZ transplant down the line.
I have early 944 na disc setup ready to be fitted upfront.

I would've fitted adapters to the rear of my van.
I cannot allow my rear track to be widened any more.
((It's a '66 Splittty with a T3 rear suspension, engine+gearbox.))

My main questions are ?
Will this modification prove to be a safe alteration ?
Will the Internal brake shoe mechanisms fit with ease if I were to perform this modification on my rear hubs+drums. ?

Thanks in advance.

There are a few things that concern me about this mod.
The studs being mounted close to the edge but doesn't the reverse side 'taper off' towards the edge? (can't see on the picture)
Also...if you haven't already seen...there appears to be a ring of dodgy weld around the centre spline.

As the shoes effectively sit behind the flange I can't see how this would interfere with the shoes...it should be fine in that respect.
Safe? hmmmmm who knows, I wouldn't trust it but hey!

Personally, the rear drums are more than up to a lot more performance, so unless it helps in keeping the track width down, I wouldnt bother... (some T25's can gvw at 2500kgs.. and SA T25's came with 2.6L 140 bhp 5 pot Audi engines..)

As for the mod..
Mmm.. if you look at the flange, the studs are mounted in a thicker part... the straight on picture doesnt tell much.. I'd like to see the back of it..
He's welded a steel plate to the front face so that had added strenght but he has increased the track on that hub by 0.5"... 13mm.. that would push the drum away from the shoes too far.. youd have to spacer the backing plate the same amout to get the shoes to line up in the drum..

There is another way.. but i'll have to speak with my engineer on that one...

Here's the reply to the email I sent him.

Hi
The studs are pressed in.  I use a short piece of pipe over the stud,  a thick washer and steel lug nut. 19mm socket and a  1/2" drive breaker bar. The hole in the hub is not splined.  I used after market Porsche 72mm studs. I went with a longer than stock stud because I wasn't sure if I would need a spacer.

This is something Like I'd need myself. As I am keeping the drums at the back.

I just got my four Genuine Fuchs rims last night. (6 hour round trip)
They came off a 911 Targa.
The seller wouldn't give me the wheel nuts. (tightarse)
You'd think in the good will of St. Patrick he'd throw them in.
Shocked how light 911 wheel nuts are.

Anyway.
I'm delighted.
I'll post pictures of them when I get time.
I hope I can make them fit SAFELY. :)

Quick question.
When 5x112 first appeared on Bays. Around '71 right.
Was the same hub used on T25's/T3's throughout their existence. ?

Have you never seen a front hub off a bay? the studs are even closer to the edge than that. We often change the pcd to 130 for fitting on porsche wheels and redrill the hubs and press insert new studs.

We can get some pictures but no welding involved with ours.
