Oil pressure sensor - passing oil!

Post by garyd »

Hi,
my clutch slave cylinder is failing and in inspecting this I found oil on the back (clutch end) of the cylinder head. The low pressure oil pressure sensor in the end of my GTi (ex JX) cylinder head appears to be leaking oil through the body of the sensor.

The area around the hexagon and seal is clean but there is oil apparently coming out of the rubber protection cup over the electical connector and sensor body.

Has anyone seen this before? Is it perhaps a common failing?

thanks

Garyd

Not on VW engines, but on others - yep, several times. I bought one car that got through six litres of oil in about 80 miles bringing it home - there was a fine mist in the air behind it, which totally coated my mate in the car behind, After the switch replaced, the engine was oil-tight.

Definitely replace ASAP - I've heard of switches that've been weeping for ages suddenly letting go totally and wrecking engines.

I've had oil leak through the body of an oil pressure switch on the sump of my wbx. Replace with a good quality part.

Funny thing... My 1990 1.9 Carovelle started dripping oil the other day. Today I took the van to get a CT (French MOT) and it left a large pool of oil on the garage floor. It passed the test and I took it home to check where the oil was comming from. I found to my supprise that the oil was comming from the pressure switch at the electrical connection!
I am going down town tomorrow to see if I can get a new one.
Kenny.
I don't know where I am, but I'm having a lovely time!

I think after twenty odd hears of service, things begin to fail.... so things failing on an old van is common I suppose
