CORRECT SPEEDO FOR MY CARAVELLE CL ? NOW SORTED

Post by SurreyT25 »

I have a 1988 T25 Carvelle CL it is fitted with a KPH speedo with RHD, I want to put in a MPH speedo in its place. It has a trip meter and the slot at the top in the back for the oil sensor circuit. I bought a speedo on Ebay (251 957 057 BH) which I thought would work but it show the speed when driving about have what it should be. What is the correct speedo I should be looking for and how can I recognize it?

Does it show the speed half of what it should be? Then it's possible that you bought a syncro speedo (if it has "1000" printed in the low middle instead of "500" that a 2wd speedo has). The syncro speedo gets its signal from the front diff, not the transmission and has another ratio. If it is a syncro speedo, you should have no problem selling it (and making a profit of it), as syncro specific parts are normally more expensive than 2wd ones

Thanks Andre,
The number is "1600" so is that for a Syncro ? Its a new old stock speedo with 5 miles on it I paid £105 for it on ebay, if you know anybody looking for one. I have seen another speedo with "805" what does that mean?
The KPM speedo does have "500" at the bottom does this mean that a MPH speedo must have "500"on it for it to work correctly?

I've just had a look in a (German) T3 Info-Page. It says the 2WD Speedos for the very early T3 (until '81) had 510 on them; from '82 onwards they had 500, which means for every full rotation of the speedo shaft, the car travels 500 road meters. If you "translate" this from metrtic system to miles, 805 would probably be the correct speedo for a 2WD (805 metres for every full rotation).
A 2WD with a syncro speedo shows only the half actual speed (therefore 1000 for 1000 metres per full rotation). In MPH, this would correlate with 1600

You might want to ask the question in the syncro section, as I am mostly guessing here.
Cheers, André

Andre,
You are correct with what you are saying, I have been on a USA website which confirms it. "805" is for the 2WD and "1600" is for the Syncro.
Thanks for that
Ken
