Eberspacher Basics
Hi ,Just bought an 87 Club Joker mit power steering und Hi roof to replace the stolen Bilbo(keep them well locked up in Finsbury park). I have a few questions about the Eber. Firstly it doesnt want to know unless the hook up is plugged in. Does this mean that the battery is no good? Just drove it 90 miles back so battery should have charged in this time.
To start it if flick the switch to the right and turn it to 7 correct? What happens is I get a green light and the fan runs (albeit it sounds noisier than I would have expected). After about 15 secs the red light comes on and the fan stops.
Any thoughts on this behaviour?
If its not firing are there any easy things to check first - what about the "noisy" fan
Thanks Chris

Re: Eberspacher Basics
If its the leisure battery thats faulty (under the drivers seat) then you should also be able to start heater with engine running.
If this is the case you will need to get a volt meter and check the voltage across the + and - terminal of leisure battery.
Needs to be at least 12.5v and also check what happens when you switch heater on.
Eberspacher requires a good voltage to start up as it does a voltage check before heater part will start up.
Try leaving van hooked up for 24 hours as this will charge leisure battery if its not goosed
Cheers,
Dave

If on start up the voltage at the leisure battery is good check the voltage at the heater connection under the rear seat.
I had the same symptoms as you recently turned out to be the wiring between the LB ad heater. I run new cables and heater now works perfectly.

Re: Eberspacher Basics
I get the bit about the LB voltage. Putting that to one side - it appears to want to work when on mains power. It doesn't do anything when the engine is running. Assuming that having it hooked up gives it the necessary voltage, should it be quite a loud noise when it is running almost a grumbling noise from the fan. Doesn't sound right to me?
Sounds like I will have to have a fiddle

Update - eating a bit of humble pie now. I left the van on "charge" using the hook up for more that 12 hours and guess what. The Eber works now! It is a bit noisy though! Can you change the fan bearings easily on these?

Re: Eberspacher Basics
Strip it down and oil the bearings - will give you quite a few more years.
If it wouldn't run when the engine was running you will need to look at your leisure charging system - is it charging?

I really do need a multimeter don't I? Just for reference the leisure battery would be under the driver seat on a LHD ?

Who knows? It all depends upon where it was put - mine I put under the rear seat.

Yes, a multimeter is essential with 20+ year old wiring.

Yes Leisure Battery under drivers seat on a LHD Westie,
Main battery under passenger seat if petrol engine or in engine bay if diesel engine.

In terms of checking the the split charger. Any ideas of where to start with this? I have ordered a multimeter from eBay. £3.50. Hope it works.

Re: Eberspacher Basics
One check without multi meter is to listen/feel it click when engine starts and battery light on the dash goes off.

Could you elaborate a little. Which battery light , the dash on or an auxiliary one? Also what clicks?

The battery light in the dash next to the oil Light. The relay In the battery box should close, making a click sound which you can also feel by holding your hand on it as the red light goes off.

Re: Eberspacher Basics
I am no expert but once you get multi meter this is how I would check split charging is working.
Set multi meter to volts
With engine off / hook up unplugged check main and leisure batteries have circa 12.5 volts by putting black lead of meter on -ve terminal of each battery and red lead on +ve terminal of battery.
Check alternator charging by starting engine and repeating check above on both batteries. They should now have circa 14.5 volts across them.
Switch off engine.
Check hook up charging by plugging in hook up and repeating check above on both batteries. They should now have circa 14.5 volts across them. (note on Westies both batteries charge when hook up plugged in, on other conversions it may just be the leisure batttery that is charged).
Cheers,
Dave
