2.0 litre air cooled oil gauges - confused.com!

Post by orangebooboobearcrew »

Hi all,

I know there has been a lot written about this but having searched for ages, I am still confused on exactly what I need in respect of oil gauges for the van.

Had a couple of scary moments last year when the oil pressure light came on while then engine was running and I have read elsewhere that it can be too late by the time the standard VW light comes on - the damage may already have been done (btw the light only came on at idle or when engine still cold so hope this not a problem>! )

Anyway, decided the get some extra gauges to keep an eye on this and want to fit both an oil pressure and oil temperature gauge. Seen various comments about the benefits / pitfalls about both types but think I would prefer to use electrical rather than mechanical as may not be quite as accurate but don't really want to do any sort of difficult install (as don't have the knowledge or skills  ) and not big on the idea of hot oil running the length of the van into the cab!

So, question time,

If I fit electrical for both, is this likely to at least give accurate enough readings to be able to spot if something is wrong or going wrong?
What are the best senders for both? Read that sump senders for VDO gauges are fragile and dipstick sender notmuch cop. What are other options without doing any machining / major mechanical work?

Thanks in advance for your help with this... :ok

Chris

On a mechanical gauge, the install is easier than electrical and the oil pipe does not contain hot oil, it is the same width as the cable you will be using for an electrical set up... cheaper too
Chris..
I would have thought cylinder head temp is more important than oil temp in an AC motor, as it will be telling you that it's going to seize after a certain point/temp . oil temp in the sump is pointless in my opinion, it's what the oil is cooling that I want to know about.
, and an oil pressure gauge is a simple affair of plugging the gauge in to the low pressure switch (in a mechanical set up) and running the capillary tube to the dash

my mechanical gauge has been in for 5 years with never a bother.

Hi Kev.
Thanks for your answers-you always make sense and come up with the goods! :ok

Yep, take your point on cylinder head gauge and this is on my list but when I have searched before I've seen similar comments about how accurate the readout is given the distance to send the reading, voltage drop and cold air flow under the van distorting the reading. However, I guess this is the same issue with oil temp gauge and at least gives a reasonable idea of changes...? :? Also, there didn't seem to be many of these around and ideally wanted VDO gauges to match others in the van and I don't think they make one. I did find some smart digital ones from US (dakota brand I think) but as I said not really in keeping with a retro van! Finally, if I remember correctly, fitting seemed quite involved if I remember with some machining via dremel or similar (which I don't have) on the head to fit the sensor - all a bit beyond me really...

Regarding oil pressure gauge, again please humour me as you are dealing with the mechanically challenged  - what bits exactly would I need to buy for a mechanical gauge (presume capillary pipe - how much, where from, does it need to be joined due to length? if so how? what bits do I need either end to connect. how / where do you run the piping to the dash? Sorry, but I could really do with an idiots guide on this...

As you say, if you have had no probs with your gauges for 5 years, no real issue and I am not averse to either type of gauge but just need something that is easy to fit and relatively accurate... :)

Thanks again :ok

Chris

Thanks again Kev.

So, where does the 'engine' end screw into? Would this be the oil pressure switch and is this easy to do? (2.0l Aircooled petrol)

Thanks,

Chris
