Non VW, Merc

Post by syncro up »

Ever since seeing an 814 hightop going through ebay, I've always fancied one for a van based camper.

Just found this on Autotrader. Ripe for a big american demountable on the back.

The 814's are great trucks, will zip along a motorway at proper speeds, lots of space inside.

Downsides though... If they break down they're a pain in the ass, 7.5t so any recovery costs a fortune, parts are stupid money as all 'commercial' (think around £1500 for new discs, pads, calipers and fitting just for the rears!)
Very slow on hills, need strong legs and back as the clutch is very heavy.

That said, there's not many other vans out there you can load up to 7.5t.
(they do a 4x4 version you know!) ;)

7.5T with the right badge.
Just not 4 wheel drive.

Think many campsites would take that awning. lol. Love it, but who slow must that have been...

Only 2wd, but a great base vehicle along the same lines...

Check out this guys conversion and sensible reasoning for arriving at the Merc...
http://4x4fulltiming.com/base_chassis.aspx
Its an awesome homebuilt camper. The big advantage with that particular design of Merc to my mind is having a bonnet, not a "tilt cab" like most trucks.
That means you can build a "luton" box over the cab and get the kids out of the way.

This guy has a whole lot of 4x4s for sale, all of which are worth considering.
DAF is a good base vehicle, 4x4 with diff locks and does 20mpg loaded.
Renault broughton RB44 is a pretty amazing machine, but remarkably heavy for its size, but again would make a great camper.Bomb proof. Not sure of the mpg, but less than the DAF i believe.
And a VW ! Man 9150 ? 4x4 (pic no9).I have never come across one before. I expect it would be good, but it must be a tilt cab eh ? Got a hiab, so you could lift a box on and off the back....

Mmmmmm Rigs
