clonk clonk

Post by Tony Tone »

Hi, when I let the clutch out from stationary, there is a noticeable clonk from the NS rear wheel. I can also hear it when Im slowing down at junctions etc. Is this a wonky CV joint ?

Might just be the bolts loose , they go like that just before they fall off
Mine was the outer joint that fell off going up a steep hill ! I "borrowed a bolt or 2 out of the other 3 cvs to get me 500 miles home 8)

I have the same trouble [see earlier post ]I have stripped it down the cv and am pretty certain that is the cause.Ordered a new set from Brick Werks on Sunday and got them on Tuesday, fast service. One problem though, in the kit is a chamfered washer there wasn't one in the old cv. Thought it might be some sort buffer between the end of the splines and the shaft but it just slides on loosely and ends up rattling around in the rubber boot. Can I assume it is not needed?

I think that you are talking at cross purposes here. He is referring to the large single washer that fits the shaft.
Not these.

As I said, not needed. That said I once come across a CV joint where the movement was so great along the shaft once circlip was on, I actually used that dished washer but never had cause to at any other time. I have a feeling the washer/spacer was used on 1302 beetles which also used bolt on rather than integral driveshafts but its been so long now I forget.

Washers under CV bolts however I'd say were essential. On the odd occasion I've had one missing, I've roughed up a conventional washer.
