I would imagine so, they are basically the same vehicle.

Yes thats why I asked. I would have thought that Mercedes went to Magna Steyr for their 4x4 stuff and VW stuck with 4motion technology. Curious ...

From what I have read, the crafter 4x4 was all aftermarket parts approved by VW.. done by Oberaigner.. they also do a 6x6.. (same supplier to Mercedes for the Sprinter)
Now they dont have the gound clearance of this "new" one.. so maybe VW/mercedes have re engineered or got them to "tough it up" a bit more..
Looks like it can have 3 difflocks..

But.. found this...

"The Crafter 4 MOTION with four-wheel drive from Achleitner is designed for use in extreme terrain, as the growing market increasingly demands for all-terrain transporters. Providers of alternative energy concepts, in particular, must increasingly gain access to regions that only rarely boast any kind of infrastructure. However, the building industry and emergency services, disaster relief organisations, the fire brigade and police are also relying on four-wheel drive vehicles more and more.

The surcharge for Achleitner to retrofit a rear-wheel drive model with four-wheel drive is approximately €19,950 (net).
The Crafter 4MOTION with four-wheel drive from Achleitner is available to order immediately from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles partners. Thus for this so-called two-invoice vehicle, the customer has just one contact person for the order and for service and warranty. This is arranged via select Commercial Vehicles partners. Initial deliveries are planned for the start of 2012."

Electricity utility companies have loads of Sprinter 4x4's, they love em.

They look pretty high off the ground too and have larger tyres than you could fit on a syncro, even with wild modifications

That's a nice nit of kit.
Very good with 3 diff locks !
I'm suprised that no one has cottoned on to the idea before.
The sprinter is a bit of a "soft roader" according to a friend at the environment agency. They are all ways getting them stuck and having to tow them out.
I'd like a van of that size, but LT syncros are a bit rare. That LT Jed was toting would do tho :D

"Reason enough, the largest transporter of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles now also equipped with a full-fledged four-wheel system. However, in order to contribute to the high moving masses of a Crafter during extreme off-road missions statement that the company Achleitner wheel-drive system comes with road ratio (2.5:1) was used. It is defined by a constant, uniform (50-50) force distribution on both axles with differential lock as standard in the transfer case and rear axle. Optionally, a lock can also be ordered for the front axle."

So it's a proper dual-range 4x4 then.

"The Crafter's 4MOTION all-wheel drive with Achleitner it known in all of Volkswagen body styles - a station wagon, a van, as well as a chassis or truck with single or double cabin"

A bit bigger than a 'velle though

I do like the interior details in the Multivan Business range, especially that nifty folding table. Not sure about "The price of the Multivan Business 2.0 TDI (103 kW) starts at € 67 595 (net)"
