Noisy radiator fan

Post by timski »

Hi Guys,

We got stuck in traffic on the way up to Birmingham on Friday and the fan kicked in as the temperature rose towards half way. After a few times of kicking in I got a really nasty rattling noise. At first I thought it might be the dreaded buzzer, which I'm glad to say I haven't heard yet :-). Anyway I pulled over to investigate. Checked water level. All fine.

Started on our way again and each time the fan kicked in we got the rattling noise. It sounded like something was obstructing the fan maybe. The fan still worked in that it lowered the temperature, but clearly something is wrong. We pulled over and waited (well slept comfortably :D) till the traffic subsided and then headed on our way.

So, has anyone got any tips as to what it might be so I can look out for that when I start investigating?

Thanks,
Tim.

PS. I had no idea traffic jams could be so relaxing until I had a T25

Remove your spare wheel, to get to the back of the radiator and fan.....have a look to see what happens when the fan kicks in.

As a side note* my thermoswitch went fault last summer and was randomly switching between 1st and 2nd speeds (two speed fan) very noisy and quite alarming the first time you hear it on 'FAST'! speed.

have had this on a couple of vans

the support bracket for the motor some how twists so the blades of the fan hit it .

if you drop the spare wheel out , lie on the tray and look up at the fan , spin it by hand you should see this.

grab hold of the motor and pull the back in a direction so the motor moves slightly so it no longer rubs

hopefully this is your problem and soloution .

if not please let us know, cheers

I'm sure I have seen some cable ties used to pull the edge of the fan cowling away from the blade tips... Clive Harrymans picture from memory.
