where does my coolant go?
Hi,
Like the recent thread I have a 89 DG with metal pipes. Currently have an issue with the cross over pipe - the one that goes across the engine behind the dizzy, fuel pump, alternator etc and heads off towards the distribution manifold - just removed and refit the engine and I have now a pipe that is about 4 foot long which connects to the end of this x over on the right hand side and dissapears into the darkness of the tranny area.
I can't find a relevant cooling diagram anywhere.
Any one else got one of these? or any ideas.
ps if i could post a pic I would.

Re: where does my coolant go?
Thanks for your help, Ian's diagram -- from vw heritage,I think, has no metal cross over pipe and I have the other diagram which as far as I can judge I have joined up. There are only two bits of kit that are between the radiator and the engine as far as I can see - The Automatic Transmission coooler - mine is a manual gearbox and definitely doesn't have one and the other is the rear heater - I don't know if I have one of these nor do I know where it would be hidden.
So back to the question does anyone have a cross over pipe and where does it go?
See the rubber pipe that goes from the choke and the other by pas pipe at the water pump to the expansion tank - the x over pipe is joined to that instead of the bifurcation thats on the vw heritage diagram.
Regards

The only 'cross-over pipe I can think of is item 6/7 on this ^ diagram .... certainly shouldn't be on a late 1.9/2.1 system though.

Re: where does my coolant go?
Ian,
Yes thats the one, I agree it shouldn't be there, I checked my VIN and appears to match (early 89 F reg) MPV ,Camper, Vanagon etc.
I am thinking maybe someone didn't fancy paying out for a relacement hose and used this instead, the thermoswitch on the left tee piece was redundant (not wired up) and bent over. I just have a horrible feeling when I get the engine going and up to temp I will get my precious antifreeze everywhere.
Hence the question if any one else had seen this on a late wedge.
Regards and thanks.

Re: where does my coolant go?
Many thanks for the quick reply and the welcome
It's the smallest of the pipes which has broken, I've repaired it by inserting a smaller copper pipe into it and glueing it with an apoxy, but I don't trust it 100% in case it gives up
If anyone has the bit I would love to buy it from you
Many thanks again

Re: where does my coolant go?
Hi Kevin
Not sure of diameter, as just found a bit of pipe amongst the junk in my garage
Think it's 8mm but it seems to have worked ?????
Would feel more secure if it was an original part though
Many thanks again
