Westy Pop Top Canvas

Post by LostValleyBoy »

Can anyone shed light on the difference between the 1985 and 1986 variants.

I have a 1985 Westy Syncro (Reg June '85) and want to know will a post 1986 canvas fit?

I have removed the old rotten canvas so need to order a replacement pronto.....I really want a grey one but they only seem to be available (@Gunzls) for the post '86 models

On a similar theme......does anyone have any experiences with thermal insulation of the pop top roof (inside)? The original cream velvet effect in mine has seen better days.....that said if I end up covering the inside of the roof in Bacofoil am I gonna end up swimming in my own sweat :|

The early ones staple on and the later ones have a metal trim to hold it on the roof.

Cheers Jed ......thats's great news.....mine has the metal strips (I thought/hoped that a mid '85 might be on the cusp).....so Grey it is then :ok

.....any tips on where I can find the best quality canvas from.

Have seen some independent manufacturers making their hoods from marine spec canvas. What are the pros/cons here....if any?

I got a top spec one from http://www.gowesty" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , it was really easy to fit done it on my own in about four hours at that included a good clean around whilst it was off as well.

Actually I have had two from gowesty and both fitted perfectly and were top quality. gunzls also get good write ups, i would avoid Jk as not heard any good feedback about quality or fit.

I fitted an early roof with wood battens or trims and the later one with the ally trims, the later one was slightly easier, make sure you have the correct size bit for removing and refitting the screws.

Cleaning the inside felt on the roof is best done with Milton sterilising liquid. It removes the mould and stains really well. For your piece of mind try on a small area at the back just to check your happy. But again I have used it successfully and when finished it made it look like new.

Good luck

Jed I'm afraid I can't condone the abuse of a fellow Welshman on "my" thread.......history will show there is a latent Ginger gene in all of us.....every once in a while it shows up in the gene pool :D

Lee - insulation looks the business.......don't suppose you've got a step by step pictorial guide on what you did?
Is this the stuff you used?

no step by step i`m afraid but i just sanded all the fur off made sure it was really clean. used a good spray glue to fix the insulation to the roof and the same glue to fix fleese material to the insulation. good glue is the secreat. i had a headlining sag with me years ago. touch wood this has stayed perfect and its been cooked with the heater and steamed with the cooker lots of times.

think this is the insulation.
