JX td or aaz td exhaust manifold.

Post by vlasnia »

Hi.
I'm in the process of swapping my 1.6 n/a diesel for a aaz 1.9 td and wanted to know if I should fit a jx td exhaust manifold and fit the turbo to it or leave aaz manifold and turbo on the engine. I've read this would make fitting the engine more complicated. I have a jx td manifold but i'm wondering if the oil pipes and exhaust pipe are going to need modifying.
Any comments gratefully received.
Will.

I've used the AAZ setup on mine, re-clocked the turbo so oil inlet is at 12'o'clock and drain at 6'o'clock. put a block bung in from brickwerks and got a hydraulic pipe made up to drain the turbo back to the JX sump. clearance is tight on the engine mount but no issues so far (>10k miles) oh now i remember one thing which is 'difficult', you do have to make up a modified exhaust section, so most people it seems go the JX route in order to keep the JX exhaust setup. swings n roundabouts

Thanks for that. As I've a jx manifold I'll probably go down that route to keep things as simple as possible but alsways good to get some ideas while the engines still sitting in the shed.
cheers,
Will.

I went JX exhaust and AAZ inlet because the inlet ports on the AAZ are a lot bigger.

If i did it again, then i would probably go AAZ all the way and get a exhaust downpipe manufactured. Then i would sell all the JX bits and make some money back!

Good luck

Thanks Ringo, I think I'm going to do the same as you as its the first one I've done so I want to keep it simple. Did you have to make new oil feed pipes for the turbo or can the original ones be persuaded to fit.
Cheers,
Will.

get a mini pipe bender tool and it'll be persuaded, is long enough. make sure you keep the p-clip(s) to keep it supported so it doesn't vibrate and crack over time

This is probably a daft question but with the jx turbo manifold should the turbo now hang under the manifold and if so do I need to rotate the turbo so the the oil lines enter and exit top and bottom as near as poss.

I recall the standard jx oil pipe to the top of the oil filter fitted. the Aaz one will need bending. I'd get a jx one for the sake of £17.

I used the Aaz turbo and re-indexed it to align correctly.

Thanks again Ringo for the useful info. I'm just trying to find someone to make good the manifold mating surface where the turbo bolts on. Its a bit pitted and don't want to get it all bolted together only to find it leaks. there's no gasket and sealant seems to be a no no. I'll try and get it skimmed locally if its poss.
Cheers,
Will.

Very good idea. I had to take mine off and get it done when I realised it was leaking. Should have done it properly the first time!

We have made these just for the job, so you can use the original engine turbo off an AAZ or early tdi and still fit to your existing JX manifold and use the original down pipe.
