Window Winder Issue - Works, but clicks when closing

My passenger door window winder works ok in the sense of opening and closing ok, but when closing, instead of the handle coming to a halt, it can still be turned in the closing position, and in doing so clicks as if its slipping on the cog or something.

My question is before removing it, is, what can cause this? Is it a common problem? My drivers side is fine, and comes to a halt firm when window fully closed.

I tried to move the glass in the passenger side to check if the glass would move open but its firm. Just the handle clicking when shut is worrying me that something is about to fail, and with the cold winter coming I don't want to risk not being able to close the window.

Your description is exactly right - it IS slipping on a cog. They do wear out after many years use. You can sometimes breath new life into them but its a total door strip almost.

Ouch! I guess that job will have to be put on the list of things to do in new year

Its rare you can actually fix a worn winder but they often go for years even when they are. Could be a prudent time to see if you can devise an electric version. Ah - the joy of pressing a button....

I do miss electric windows from past experiences, but think I will stay with manuals on my Syncro. Then again, Im famed for changing my mind

No mate, it feels fine, and works as intended, its just that when closing the window, its still possible to turn the handle once window is shut, although only with a little pressure, it clicks, and don't park into position like the drivers door handle.

ah ok then . when there is wobble in the handle then its the bearing and I repair them dead easy, in your case easier to swop the mech; dead easy job about 1hr turnaround, get it done and dont be lazy cos it will let you down at the worst time....

These are the same part as the Polo's of that era aren't they.
Looking at mine (89) compared to a 91 polo they look exactly the same
Makes for finding spares a bit easier.

Also. many beetle electric fitments that match up to the winder stub will fit as this part of the winder mech is the same on bugs and T25s. I went that route and found some motors for £7 the pair.

Well today whilst running Flint to recharge his battery a little, I managed to remove the faulty winder handle to reveal the issue. Like a numpty though at first I was trying to remove the round part of the plastic of the window winder to gain access to the screw that retains it, then upon successfully unscrewing it, it got looser, and looser, then came off revealing the following.



As you can see, due to the window winder handle being loose, its been rounding the teeth off, and as you can see, leaving metal filings at the six oclock position.

I will clean this area the best I can and see how it fairs once I refit the handle.

I didn't realise that you have to remove the complete plastic moulding of the handle to gain access to the screw head Lesson learned.
