radiator fan
Hope you can help with this. This morning i replaced my radiator fan because the old one didn't work on the slower speed and then blew the fuse on higher speed. Higher speed would work with a 16 instead of 8 amp fuse. The new fan [cheers faggie]was tested prior to fitting and worked at both speeds. When tested on the van it blew the 8 amp fuse again, but worked at both speeds on a 16 but i didn't want to run it on a 16 for fear of burning something out. Now when i try to test it i'm getting a clicking from the vicinity of the relay switches, no fan speeds and no blown fuses.

Re: radiator fan
Not my information but I found this on an old thread:
Up to 1985 the CS 1.6 NAs had the normal DG/DF radiator 068-121-253 A At frame no. F 24-D-000-001 ... 1985 model year.. A year later , cowlings and fans changed too... the JX fan size jumped from the std. 300/200 Watt/ 305mm to 500 Watts/350 mm nominal dia. !! The main other difference ...
Now the reason I was looking in the first place was I had thought the fuse amperage couldn't possibly by only 8amp when the motor draws 300watts plus....thats 25amps! and much more than that if that 500watt is correct. (watts divided by volts = Amps)
Thats probably peak when the motor 'starts' to spin but all the same...much more than 8amps.

Re: radiator fan
Looking at the fuses on the Brickyard info section the radiator fuse should be 30 Amp.

Re: radiator fan
My van is an '83 and the manual says it should be 8 amp, so when that blew i put a 16 in just to see if it ran[it did] but people warned me not to run it on a higher amp. I'm going out to see if i can why all i'm getting now is a clicking sound. Found the relay that is clicking, high up under the dash.

Re: radiator fan
Morning to you....JRT...I think you are missing the point here a little. Even the early fan motors were 200 watts so would not have been protected by an 8amp fuse. Are you sure the fuse you are looking at isn't for the 'blower' motor (heater blower) which is also prone to blowing fuses when they are old and partially seizing.
As for the clicking noise...well as far as I am aware there wasn't a relay involved in this circuit (early setup) so a clicking noise 'caused by a high amp draw' could be 'arcing' from a loose connection perhaps.

Re: radiator fan
I'm on the verge of giving up now and letting an auto electrician sort it out as i now bugger all about electrics. The fuse is an 8 amp as stated in the Haynes and the vans operators manual. Apparently a van of my age [83] should have a 1 speed fan although some do have 2 speed. I also read that it shouldn't have a relay but i thought i'd have a look under the dash as i heard the clicking noise coming from a white relay high up above the fuse box[no 171937503].

According to Bentley the radiator fan on 83/84/85 water cooled is 16Amp, diesel & 86 onwards it's a 30A.

Re: radiator fan

The relay clicking when the fan is tested is the white one on the right. Can anyone identify it as a fan relay. My van is a 1.9 petrol caravelle 1983.

Re: radiator fan
In that case it should be a 16 Amp fuse if it all as original. But if you have upgraded from the original setup you may need to upgrade your wiring and relay to suit the new which is possibly the later 30Amp requiring fan.
That 8Amp fuse doesn't appear in any wiring diagram from 1980 to 1991 that I can see. I don't know where Haynes got 8A from.

Re: radiator fan

This is the fuse layout from the vwt25 instruction manual that came with the van.
Is the white switch in the photo the fan relay?

Re: radiator fan
I to have this and believe it is the relay for the Rad Fan?

The markings are if it helps
171 937 503
07.1200.00 SJR
12V MAX 40A
Yours show a relay to the left of that, wonder if anyone knows what it is for? I can find no reference to it
I have the old style fuse in place 7 (Rad Fan) it's a pink fuse marked with 16, the Haynes wiring diagram shows 30A fuse so am a bit puzzled myself
