FatMat soundproofing / insulation

Post by Poseidon »

As part of the van rebuild I'm in the middle of I decided to use FatMat to deaden sound and also provide some insulation.
I bought 100sq feet, which I hope is enough.
Its really easy to fit (fun also)

Hopefully will get the rest in tomorrow :D

What sort of prices is this stuff going for? I plan on doing the same in the new year.

I've just finished the rear floor, it really does make a difference, I should get the rest of the interior covered tomorrow as it will also go inside of the panels, and also onto the roof.
The 100sq ft I got was just over £300. I have to say that although it sounds expensive it's really really good.

I'll put some more pics up later, there are more on my Flickr feed..

Excellent, thanks. So whats your plan once this is down? Insulation, then another layer, then marine boarding?

Dont bother with the rip off stuff, get flash banding from any decent builders merchant just as good fraction of the price!

Yep, next plan is to route the 240v cabling, then putting the floor down. This time i'm using self tapping screws rather than adhesive.

Do bother getting this.. Flash banding is made for roofs, and goes hard, this then effectely stops it acting as it should after it hardens. It will be fine for a bit. It also uses bitumen based so it smells odd, especially in hot weather!

For the price I have to say that I see it as an investment!

Modified bitumen, asphalt, coal tars and all related substances are made from refined crude oil and all emit substantial levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which are known carcinogens. Roofers and road workers both have a high risk of contracting cancer or other health problems when exposed to the PAHs emitted from asphalts and tars daily. For consumers, the risk levels are unclear, although it is safe to say the fumes emitted by off-gassing tars and bitumens are truly not good for your health.

might be best off sticking to the proper stuff...
up to you of course, but i certainly wouldn't want to be sleeping in a hot van in the middle of summer breathing in bitumen fumes

Do you know how hot it has to be to start gassing! People wh0 think they know what there talking about ( ie those who sell the "proper" stuff) will tell you not to use it!

I used to be into big stero systems in cars doing sound off compitions and even the suppliers of d max and alike said its the same stuff!

How did fatmat work for you? Were you happy with the results? I did a lot of research and came up with quite a few places that sell stuff that might help. One place that I remember that might have the kind of soundproofing that you would need are at that place. I am pretty sure that some of the other suggestions people have made would also work. Just depends on if you want to make it or buy it. Does anyone know if sound blankets would work?
