It is a battery charger which connects to the 240 volt hookup and charges your batteries when you are connected to the mains. It should not get hot. However, you must ensure that nothing is covering the vents in the charger otherwise it will heat up. If you have not covered the vents and it still gets hot I suggest you get it checked out by an auto electrician.

Known as the 'buzzing black box' or BBB charger, these were fitted to Westies to charge both the starter and leisure batteries when plugged into the mains supply (hook up)
If either of the batteries runs down (usually the leisure battery) the BBB tries to top up the charge and after half an hour or so can get pretty hot (unfortunately quite normal) as I say unfortunately, as this isn't a good thing but they all do it.
If you leave it on.....it will gradually cool down (from hot to warm) as both batteries reach their full charge capacity....
Personally I've been toying with the idea of fitting a fan in the top lid to reduce the running temperature but that would add noise.

If the eber does not work tell us what is happening

I'm sure you're not the only van with a busted one.

Thanks kev have posted before re eber, done all basic things, it blows cold air when thermostat is off when turned on fan reudces speed and doesnt heat up green light comes on and eveything seems normal but no heat. I dont camp in winter just wondering if its worth spending £100s of pounds getting it done :?:

You never responded to my post therefore you received no further help -assumed that you had fixed it in Nov. 2009!

The majority of it is very easy.
Start with - what model is it? It should be on a plate on the heater.
What controller/timer is fitted?
Describe exactly what happens when you switch it on - exact sequence and timings (in seconds) of any events such as clicks, fan speed change etc.

i think its either a dl1 or bl1 think it runs on lpg. The thermostat in the van has a 3 position switch middle off, left blue, right red, also has green light that does illuminate. Fan turns on blue switch but when put to the red position it immediately slows down also no heat at all. I presume in order to get to the heater you access it from under the van :?:
Thanks

A photo may help in identifying it. How do you know that it is an Eberspacher? It could be one of many models. Some models are mounted externally and some internally. Just follow the exhaust and you will find it - either a 22mm,24mm,28mm or 30mm pipe depending upon model
It is highly unlikely that it runs off lpg. There was a lpg model produced by someone but I think that was Webasto many years ago.
Usually the heater runs off the same fuel as the vehicle. A B1l runs on benzine (petrol) a D1l runs on diesel.

The blue indicator is for when it is in ventilation mode.
