air cooled camper loosing power and stops, goes again ,?

ok vw dudes ,,,,,, i have a old x reg camper, 2.0 a few weeks ago it started loosing power after driveing 2/3 miles , id pull to side turn off and turn on again , it would get me back home ok ,,,,, so spent £60 on new electric pump and fitted it , unlike the old one , it continually ticks , i presume thats what modern pumps do ,,,,, tried today , got 3 miles up , THE MOTORWAY ,! ..... AND ITS DONE IT AGAIN , SO NOW ITS BACK HOME AGAIN ...... ONLY GOT about £10, OF fuel in tank , so im thinking of filling some petrol cans up ,from local garage ,in case its crap in tank and give it another go ?? any you guys can help would be good . its had new plugs and all that stuff this summer .

Sounds like you might have a fuel blockage - I'd look at replacing the fuel filter and checking/cleaning the ones in the carbs also, you need to remove the fuel pipes to get them out.... has anyone altered any settings on the carbs do you know?

Check / change fuel filter (s)

Tighten all hose clips.

Change any iffy hoses, including vacuum pipe on distributor.

hi will cheque carbs tommozza ,,,, i have had it in recently for carbs , because it wouldnt tick over very well . sometimes it was ok other times it wasnt ,,,it was fine for a lil while ,,,,, then >>>> still dont like to tick over on choke ??/

What carb/s are you running on?

checked >>.im running on solex carbs , >>>>>>>>checked everthing for tightness , all pipes ( they were all ok )filters ok really .air pipes plugs etc fine , there was a brass filter looking torpedo thingy in the new petrol pump box , dont know what it was for , so left it off ,,, anyway its just acting the same as when old pump was still on , im just £60 lighter !! . >>> i drive up the road 2/3 miles fine shortly after settled in 4th>>>. starts to and does peeter out , pull to side turn of , turn on again and of it goes , im not risking it further because im on busy byepass when i go out , so i just bring it home again ... seems ok and gives no trouble getting same distance back home !!????

sounds like mine. had vacuum hoses replaced and had the timing done and carbs set up. never been better now.
it had all the symptoms of fuel starvation, and when you pulled over the bowls would fill up again and when you set off again it would die. does it back fire slightly, more of a pop really and is worse on hills, can just barely crawl up em?

HI SIR SOUNDS VERY SIMILAR , BUT HAD NEW AIR HOSES AND CARBS SUPPOSEDLY ? DONE ! JUST BEFORE IT STARTED GOING WRONG , DID POP FART TOOO , WHEN I GOT IT BACK IT RAN REALLY FAST AND GOOD TICKOVER ETC WENT FOR SUMMER RUN 100 MLS , BUT THEN FOUND ONE OF ROCKER GASKETS LEAKING OIL, FITTED NEW ONE , WENT 12 MILES FOR MOT , GOT MOT ! AND IT ALL STARTED AFTER ON THE WAY BACK ie 3 MILES FROM HOME , MANAGED TO GET HOME OK , FITTED NEW PUMP THINKING THAT WOULD SORT IT , AND ITS JUST PLAYING UP THE SAME AS ,,AFTER 3 MILES UP THE ROAD ( BYEPASS! )), SCAREY .......IF I DONT SORT SOON MIGHT JUST HAVE TO try to FLOG it INSTEAD ,>>>>. check the timing and it is all retarding properly. the mot station didnt adjust the mixture to get through the emissions?

Twin solexes are great when they are properly set up.

Sounds like fuel starvation, as you can go 3 miles. This is more than the carb bowls hold.

If you have tested the flow of petrol coming out of the pump to the carbs, (connect hose into glass jar and spin engine over on starter, or maybe just ignition on with an electric pump)

It is then worth checking the main jets in the bottom of each bowl. Remove top of carb, remove float, Remove the brass screw at the base of the bowl, then with a short flat blade screwdriver remove the central jet. Blow clean with compressed air.

I do have some videos of this, but can't seem to find them on you yube. I'll have another look and post the link.

I know exactly what it is. The carbs just need balanceing properly. It had me stumped the 1st time I came across this problem. If I remember correctly on the top of the left hand (as your looking at the engine from the back of the van) carb there is a balancing screw have a play with this until both carbs are sucking the same amount of air. then take your van on the same run. keep tweeking it until the problem goes away.

SORRY FOR SHOUTING ...... ! thanks about messing about on left side carb untill maybe right , sounds nice and easy , screw in take for test and so on , just the left carb is that ? will have a go when ive got more petrol in it !! thanks ,,,,
