Nothing in wiki, and Haynes just shows a pair of old pliers squishing the inch-long spring which gets captured by that pin and the retainer-cap-----

now I know why I've left this job alone since last did it about 11 years ago! !
Does anyone PLEASE have any hints or tips ? Has anyone invented a spesh tool for the job?
regards to all,

jaylo

There is a 'spring puller' which is like a T handle with a hook on the end

Ian, it needs a squeezer, not a puller!

Sorry, I read it to read 'return springs'. I use a pair of waterpump pliers ..

Mine have a button so they can be set at a certain minimum size which prevents the cap slipping out.

get a normal large pair of pliers and hold the clip end on , then pin in hole, hold with pinky , rest spring over said pin then should have said to orientate pin so the leg bit is say 12 ocklock-6 o'c then knowing this push retainer over it and turn a touch , dead easy after youve done it once,

Nerrrrr! you are going to struggle with both of those!
In my experience you absolutely can't beat locking pliers or to be exact, Vise Grips

different technique, fit the return springs first then wedge the shoes out while fitting the cup and spring and pin retainer. use the cable tie to compress the spring while fitting.

If you have got a weak pinky (or its minus 5 on a Febuary evening and you cant feel anything) then find a piece of wood that you can use two pinkys to hold it with.

Hello,
Copper grease the spring and especially the pin and washer.
Remember to keep the job clean and avoid inhaling any brake dust.
Cordialement,
