I have just had my rotten mild steel frankenstein exhaust removed and a new Stainless exhaust built and fitted. The exhaust is now quite a bit longer which has resulted in a noticeable increase in low and mid range torque. I should hopefully see see mpg improvements. Certainly you don't need to press as hard on the go pedal to get it shifting.
Originally it was going to be 2 12" long 5" mufflers along the back and one more in line off the downpipes at the side but space was an issue so instead the 3 mufflers have been welded together and placed along the back.

1987 2.9 litre VR6 powered Syncro - Westy wannabe.
£560 - made from medical grade stainless. From the exhaust manifold down. The flanges are mild steel because they cost £20 each in stainless and Billy (Complete Auto Solutions) said the mild steel flanges are 10mm thick and do the job equally as well.

Re: the flanges, I'd have paid the £20 anyday! I had to make a couple from scratch in (304 stainless) for the SA collective recently and they took all morning to machine! If I had charged for them they'd have been £80 each plus the material

Curly wurly to give it length. The original pipes were quite short and as a result the low and mid range punch wasn't great. If the mild steel flanges rot then they can be replaced easily enough.

Ah, got it. The downpipes look a reasonable length, which is the downfall of a lot of poorly-performing conversion systems. Interesting that the overall system length has an influence too, it suggests that you can have an exhaust that's too short in the mistaken belief that it will be less restrictive, when in fact what's needed is the correct resonant length for efficient scavenging. But that's a science in itself...

I really hope it isnt made from medical grade stainless. Medical grade stainless is for medical applications not exhausts. I would hope he used 304 or even 303. Even though his work is good. Ive seen Billy's work before.
