Cutting out, holiday on friday!!! Help!!!

Weird problem with our 1.9 DG. When traveling along at 45mph ish, the engine seems to cut out (no power) and then backfires and goes again! Seems to do it in all gears. There are no lights that come on the dash when it happens. Carb has been cleaned recently, however has completely run out of fuel since (dodgy fuel guage!!). Set up mixture etc the other day and set the CO to 1.2% (book says 1.5% +- 0.5%) and timing has been set as per book.

We are going away on Friday so dont want to break down! Please help asap!!!!

New fuel filter should solve it, it will be full o cak!

did think that, just seems like the ignition is cutting off? do the hall sensors often fail?

Check the small cone filter on the inlet to the carb.

Changed the fuel filter today and cleaned the one in the carb, see hhow she goes in a bit!

That was your problem, the fuel filters seem to all of a sudden fail with exactly the symptoms you mentioned.. I tend to keep one in my spares kit now.. its amazing the effect it has when a £3 part fails...

Looking at that filter I'd be reading up on changing petrol tanks as well if I were you.

turns out it wasn't the fuel filter as it still did it once it was changed. Stripped down the carb and found lots of c**p in the float chamber and a big lump wedged in the main jet feed pipe!!!! Seems to be better now!!! Only problem now is it dies when you dip the clutch approaching a junction!!!!

Stalling problem was also dirt!!!

All sorted now (touch wood!!) Thanks for the advice!!
