Found some 16" brake cylinders quite cheap, but is their stuff good or poo?

I have had a couple of orders from them, there were mistakes with both, which was not really sorted out satisfactorily, but nothing really too bad. The stuff I have had from them has been good.

Some of the replacement rear cylinders are slightly different to the originals, and a mate with a 16 ended up just rebuilding the originals. If they are cheap it sounds like they might be the slightly different ones. I cant remember what the difference was exactly, not had the rear drums off for a couple of years. He did not get them from buscmiede though.

I would rebuild the old ones first, they will prob be OK.

The brakes on a 16 are really good, and I have never thought I needed anything more. Even the handbrake holds easily on the steepest of hills. I have only adjusted mine once at the last mot (decoupler disengaged) and the brake distribution was even better, the auto adjusters seem to look after themselves.

Cheers Simon. Was trying to locate some, just in case the bleed valves snap off. They aren't leaking, so hopefully will keep them. i got the brake pipe off them today, had to cut the pipe and use a socket. I think if i need to get new ones, i'll bite the bullit and get genuine ones from syncrospares (£45 each)

It's normally of good quality and with good service.

Can't vouch for the slave cylinders though.

i could be wrong, cos it was about 5 years ago i replaced mine, but i have a feeling the cylinders are the same as LT ones. might be worth a check.

Cheers for comments, as hotpod said above I have found out (thanks Russell) that the same part is from a post '88 single rear wheel LT and are under £20 each

i remember now. vw were quoting something shocking, if indeed they still had any, and my garage on a hunch did some checking and i got them that afternoon from my local auto supplies. was chuffed indeed.
if you get the part number it might be worth doin a 16" brakes wiki to store that kind of info.

I'm wondering if the drums could be sourced similarly, might be a cheaper way than the £100 per drum that I was quoted recently

i think we looked into that and although the drums are the same size, the stud pattern is different and we discounted re drilling them for some reason.
probably because by the time we had done that properly we might just have well have bought the proper ones. i got mine from bernd jaeger as he seemed to be the only one selling them at the time. the pound was really good against the euro then too so they werent so expensive. (the brand new visco i bought at the same time worked out less than £500.)

I'll get the part number of the wheel cylinder and put it on here. A source of drums would be good. Syncrospares had them advertized for £75 each, gave them a call, they said they had one left and I could have it for £100 (surely your meant to get them in pairs)
Can still get them in germany, so you either get killed by shipping or have to wait for vanfest

jaeger has them for 140 euros, i think that each.
the plus point is that they do last an awfully long time.
i am sure they were more prevalent a couple of years back. i bought some for the camper off cj who had them on the shelf.

It's probably similar to the LT version from where the other bits are sourced.

I got some from vw a couple of years back. They were from an LT and about 38 quid each. I only needed one but there was a diffence of a couple of mm piston diameter so had to do a pair.

At that money why dont you consider a rear disc conversion like the one Silverbullet has.
