prop shaft

Post by lhd »

I tried to fit my prop on Sunday to test the VC and I couldn't get it on with reasonable force, should it be like this?

I recon If I used a jack I could force it in there but surely it being this tight it's going to damage the drivetrain.

You can always loosen of the bolts that hold the front diff in place to give you some movement..

as Jake points out the correct procedure is to loosen off the front mount bolts first then (also applies to removal) fit prop then allign and tighten front mount bolts but I've seen people lump them out with a big hammer and that's a garage

Carefull positioning of the front diff will easily allow the prop to pop in and out, with a small amount of leaverage against the diff (between diff case and subframe).. NEVER jack or force the prob, they bend...
If its too tight with a small amount of leaverage, loosen the diff mounting bolts, reposition...

You also dont want a sloppy fit either.. as pulling the joints is also gonna wear them faster...

Jack the front up.
I never have a problem on the ramp, they come on and off easily.
I did however do one the other day on the 4 post ramp with the weight on the wheels and it was a swine.

As I have had a stiff VC for the 6+ years I've owned it, I am a dab hand at prop in/out... always in the summer and long trips.. winter it gets left in quite often.. but doesnt generally go far...

Jacking up doesnt make much sense.. unless that snall amount of flex in the bodyshell makes all the difference.. correctly positioned front diff and a gentle lever works for me, every time...

Good to know! With winter coming up I was going to 'pop' mine back in; thinking it was an easy job (prop shaft was out when I bought the van).

Is there any thing else that should be done to a little used shaft before it goes in?

(please refrain Jed)
