Re: Rusty seams ... anyone seen this before
its a thin coating , its no use if there is rust or holes but you would repair these first, as for the seams then same rules apply, grit blast etc and hopefully not letting it fill the seams as this looks a bodge and is, , I think titus d had this done anyhow there was a good long post on bodywork about this with good pickies not so long back

It says fills in rust, but then I'm sure we would have heard of it by now if it was as good as it seams,

Re: Rusty seams ... anyone seen this before
anything i make for outdoors use ( including any van parts, armour, bumpers etc) is shot blasted and hot zinc sprayed prior to pain or powder coating. there are railings by the harbout in st ives which i made as a teenager which still look as good as the day i fitted them. zinc oxidises very quickly which gives it self healing properties up to a point.
the sprayed molten zinc is already oxidised when it is applied meaning it doesnt need to be weathered like hot dipped galvanising and is already thirsty for paint.
i had never thought to try it on van seams, but it does sound like it could be well worth a try.
Zinc has a self-healing mechanism in it. The zinc coating sacrifices itself slowly by galvanic action to protect the base steel. This sacrificial action continues as long as any zinc remains in the immediate area.
Zinc Spraying
Atomised particles of molten zinc are projected on to a grit-blasted steel surface from a special flame or arc pistol fed with zinc or zinc alloy wire. The process is often applied to structural components too large to be dipped in a galvanizing bath, and to structures which are likely to distort during hot dip galvanizing.
the sprayed molten zinc is already oxidised when it is applied meaning it doesnt need to be weathered like hot dipped galvanising and is already thirsty for paint.

Re: Rusty seams ... anyone seen this before
Was just talking to the guy It works out about 8-10 euros per foot for seams also the process effectively deseams the van as the zinc acts as a seam sealer so no further tigersealing he is also mobile and will travel if there is a space to work in if we could get two or more vans for him to work on and do a group discount I'm in any other Irish syncronauts interested?

Is that price for working on a prepped van? Or a van still in paint?
