hola!! help please...

Post by roryoz »

hello all,

we need a little help or advise.

myself and my girlfriend are over from australia with the plan to travel around europe. we baught 'rory' our 82' T25 autohomes camper 2 months ago in the Uk. he's made it through france and half of spain but now he's pretty sick.

i think the piston rings are gone. no compression. sooti spark plugs. DOES NOT DO HILLS (well first gear flat out doing 45ks with a spainish truck 3 cms off our bum)

starter moter went yesterday. have to start it with a hammer. think there are some oil return seals that have gone too. loosing alot of oil.

we were told by a machanic near Bilbao that the best place in spain to try to get it fixed would be barcelona. so where halfway there, fingers crossed make it there this afternoon. might not make it though.

SO, looking for any advise? has anyone else been stranded in spain? machanics in barcelona? is anyone spainsh? we found fuego.org , which looks helpfulbut its all in spainish. possible costs if engine replacement or reco? ideas if we had to get it back to the uk?

sorry its a bit vauge, just a little stuck at the moment. :|

thanks in advance,

stuart and bettina

Stu, I can't help you myself (being a watercooled guy Image myself) but that should be a CU '2 litre' engine. More information is here ... https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Ma ... rcooled.29 on the wiki pages you could also try posting in the Technical Forum where there will be Aircooled experts to help you

All the very best, Ian.

i think the piston rings are gone. no compression.
How are you testing the compression, and what readings are you getting? Are you getting blue smoke out of the exhaust or crankcase breather when you rev the engine?

sooti spark plugs
Normally sooty spark plugs are an indication of a rich mixture. Choke stuck on, or blocked air filter maybe? Worn piston rings normally mean engine oil gets into the cylinder making the plugs wet & oily.

do you know how quick piston rings deteriate?
If the oil has been regularly changed and the engine hasn't been over-heated piston-rings could last over 100,000 miles or more. Low (no) oil and a over-heated engine could mean the rings last less than 100 miles.

If it were me I'd find the source of the oil leak and fix that first. Running the engine with low oil is a sure fire way to kill it. Next I'd check the air filter and clean it as best I could until I could get a replacement. Finally I'd check the timing and make sure the carbs are set-up properly. A CU engine is about as simple an engine as you can get, any garage should be able to this for you.

As above - how are you checking the compression? If this is just a possibility you've considered rather than something that's actually been checked, then:

Check the electrical connections to the chokes - if one or both has failed/come adrift symptoms like you describe may well happen.

If you need a garage in/near Barcelona there is a t25 specialist in vallirana (maybe 20ks from Barcelona). It's on the left handside of the N-340a as you head up through the town towards Villafranca - easy to see because of all the vans parked outside. Never used it, but drive past it a lot and it's always busy with vans in various states of restoration, so suspect it's good a one. Seen Aircooled outside too.

Good luck with it

If the piston rings were away the spainish truck 3 cms off our bum wouldn't see much as the smoke out the back would be very bad.
Keep the oil topped up very important.

Hope you make it bud.

If you make it as far as central France, feel free to drop by.

We can do engine rebuilds (Aircooled), provided you're not in too much of a hurry.

wow, such great support guys thanks! really appreciate it.

didnt make it far. filled him with oil. would have dropped a good 5L over night. after that made it about 9ks down the road.

not much of a mechanic, and engine isnt out so we´ll haveto wait and see.

have it in a garage here, just trying to work thought the language barrier.

might check the one out near barcelona, sounds good, just wish we had the option to drive it there.

been quoted 600 euro to tow to barca.

thanks again guys

Hi again guys,

Need a bit more help.

Easiest way to check if we have CU or CV engine?

It's 1970cc, 1982, air-cooled.

At a shop now and seems that they are getting parts.

Thanks again!

The engine number should be stamped on the top on the engine block to the right of the dizzie. It will start CU or CV.
