best screen rubber lube and holes in bottom of sliding door?

Post by waltraud »

Just been on the phone to Bilt-Hammer (they make dynax s50 cavity wax) as I was going toi use this was as a screen lube to put new sreen rubber in (OEM) anyway, they said the wax was ok but its carrier in the spray can would be no good for rubber and suggested just using it on the metal screen edges and leaving to dry. What lube is safe? I know washing up liquid is corrosive with salt in- have heard of people using KY?? or even soap?? what is the general consensus about best lube. I'm using nylon rope which is about 4mm thick- is a thicker one any better at not ripping into the rubber when it gets tight...have done several windows before and used this size rope and god knows what w=up liq!!

2nd Question is whether there should be drainage holes at inside base of sliding door when wleding on a new inner and outer panel, saw Metal Mike's posts and could not quite see whewre the holes (not the big ones on the inner lower panel) should be. Many thanks. Tim

NB ANyone know a very good welder in North/east London for the bits I can't do!

KY in aerosol is good (dont even ask why they may make it in a spray) or the white water soluble stuff that tyre fitters use,or most factors do an aerosol rubber lube (but clearly label this "no for personal use" ,just incasey anyone swipes it of you :rofl
Holes ah we spend so much time filling them up and you want to make some  There are none.

Ive just confirmed by checking a few vans and nope none.I put some in just below the big holes you speak of but when you think of it, the front doors have them because water gets in past the scrapers so has to have a way out,

Vans dont have them as there is no window so no water in there.

The mini bus/ caravelles had factory glazing so no water getting to inside

BUT we have vans with windows cut in so there is now a path for water/condensation to run off the glass and go straight to the inner bottom of panals..

mike :ok

you used the old rubbers? thought we were a bit sharp oop north but.....
it does help to use lube on the front and rear screens as they sort of pop in to the best seating position which has to be good.

Dear all, thanks Mike, I dill heed your quasi-medical advice and only apply to the gl-ass and no body parts.

with the front and rear screens, we only apply lube  to the outer part that sits in the screen hole and dont put any in with the glass nor do we use any with the rope or whatever your using, you need this to have some purchess, the lube on the frame side will help it seat as you hammer (heel of hand or rubber mallett, i prefer former)and the cord should not need force just steady circular motions .

As an aside, I once visited the F.ord plant at Dagenham in the early 80's when I used to work in a main dealer and the cars on the line there had their bodyglasses fitted, with rubbers attached, dry and the men used rubber mallets to bang them in place  I asked why they did it that was and was told that as the bodyshells weren't as yet stressed, i.e car not been used on a road, the shell still had a degree of movement left in it. I didn't quite believe that statement to be honest, but, the floor wasn't littered with broken screens either!

dont think it has much to do with stress. some fittings you can pop in with a mallet, it helps if you have a pile of screens sat available at no cost, and youve done a few thousand of them.
as an aside we had a car (fjord) arrive many years back and the owner couldnt blow the tyres up as there were no valves fitted, it was the seventies, I leave you to work the answer out.

Silicone lube would be a rubber metal safe option. careful when searching for it some sites seem dubious!
Heres some at RS components 100grams? I wonder if that would do you for a window? http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/precison- ... s/0494124/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Has the added benefit of water repelling. I wonder if it is too good whether the the glass would be tempted to leave the van in use though!

Cheers Bob- in fact i got some silicone grease for use with rubbers and platics and it clearly says not harmful to rubber....i had head previously that silicone sealant was bad for rubbr seals but again that must b a diferent chemical compound and material to silicon grease I am assuming- anyone confirm this?

ANyway, i have had a good dig around beneath screen corners and looked from underneath the dash- in fact there ae only two very small patches one with a hole in it otherwise its all very good thankfully- nevertheless i'll still need a dry and hopefully warmish day to take out, strip, cut back to good weld in a small new section, vatan, prime, paint and new OEM screen with lube......been decorating outide of houseall day- sometimes you just have to get on with real priorities.
