Horn mechanism

Post by loo99car »

Anyone know where one could find or order a Horn mechanism or a parts diagram (not the horn push but the 'bronze? wiper springy bit' and the brass? contact base)
Both are almost completely worn & goouged out :( . Thanks in possible advance. :D

PS; yes the horn earthing wire in the columm is also shorting randomly shorting and its the only time the Horn sound :oops: ....but thats easily replaced.

Firstly welcome and tofind parts go to http://www.vagcat.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and register.

Then sign in and click part catalogue

Then select Type 2

Then select your year and look for the relevant

For quick reference heres a link direct http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/T2/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I think all years are the same so looking at on this link http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/T2/1990/78/52/884787/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I think you need part number 29 321419661A - return ring with slip ring 165MM /

----------------------------------------------------------

It looks like this

Image

So it's either your local VW commercial dealer http://www.volkswagen-vans.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (I can't tell you the price as I am at work but a quick phone call should do it).

If they are dearer at VW or obsolete the there is one on ebay for £22 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Transporter-19 ... 0575695768" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But I could be completely wrong on all of the above. If I am the part you need may be part of the steering wheel itself:lol:

Hello,

to add to Cruz's helpful links, if you're after the springy bit of metal that contacts with the steering wheel part, then it's actually a removable prong from the indicator assembly (I think - could be the wipers, can't remember). I made a temporary solution out of some copper circuitry from a knackered old multiplug thing I had, and it's just stayed there...

when mine started to go I went through a local village in heavy traffic enraging everyone while desperately trying to reach the right fuse... so I sympathise

Ewen, man after my own heart. In fact it'd be cheap enough to pick up a new multiplug and strip it for the bits. I'm forever doing things like that when lookng for solutions. T25s are basically big meccano sets :D

A wise biker once told me: "If you want car bits, go to a bike shop. If you want bike bits, go to a car shop." - lot of truth in that. The price of some items is often the perceived value. Those sprung pushrod tubes are a prime example. :wink: What a rip off they are!

Chickenkoop once had a hose go that was either obsolete or ridiculously priced. We replaced it with a silcone one but it flattened out when pulled round into a bend. Scratching out heads we went to the pumbing section in a DIY store and bought one of those copper bendy pipes used for connecting bath taps. Slid that into the pipe and it stopped the pipe flattening. :D Job done.

Hi CovKid,

thanks for that - I totally agree, and often appreciate your posts for their ingenuity! Must go down the plumb centre to see what I can do about a snorkel :-)

The other side of it makes me laugh sometimes - there are occasionally people on the tdi forums who ask for part numbers for M10 nuts..... perhaps they are trying to win a concourse competition or something.

My view is that wheels and brakes you have to pay what you have to pay, but everything else has more than one solution. Sometimes a day or two chewing over a problem will pay dividends. Simply throwing money at a problem won't always solve it. If a part breaks, you can replace it but I'd be wanting to know WHY it broke before I parted with my cash. Weaknesses can take many years to show themselves and the T25 has many. Some things are fair wear and tear and a new VW part may be right course but some bits were never made to last and therefore need a more robust replacement. I have to say. instead of a brass clip for horn contact, I'd have designed some sort of rolller mechanism.

Its the same with body rot. Always work out what caused it before welding in new sections or theres no progress. VW would I am sure have taken the same approach had they kept making the T25. Agree on the VW part number brigade but then for some its just an expensive hobby. For me its a way of life and skips turn up the most useful things sometimes. :D

Always happy to pass on my mean, penny-pinching solutions. Often, they make a lot of sense. You can tell I write for a living..... :rofl
