Tyre shaving?

I had a blow out on saturday afternoon heading to Vanfest, i was doing around 75 and in the middle lane, never happened to me before and was a bit scary! I was gutted too as it meant i couldnt get there and camp on saturday to make the most of a full day sunday

I had just put my MT's back on after they had been stacked up for for a few months, but i dont have a spare wheel that matches that set. I was just thinking about buying a new tyre and getting it shaved to match the others....has anyone done this before and know who does it? will any tyre place do it for me?

I dont know why i had a blow out, other than the tyres being "pooh" kingpin MT remoulds, but i guess thats the risk when you buy tyres for £40 each. I only planned on using them off-roading...

Vanfest was good though! I really enjoyed seeing all the custom work on the syncros, and some pretty mental engine swaps!

What sort of wear is on the remaining 3 tyres?

Still plenty of tread left, will measure they depth tomorrow...

MT's should have about 12mm of thread when new I think so if they are within 3 or 4 mm of that just buy a new tyre and stick it on or better still get two and put them on the front.

i like the idea of buying two and sticking them on the front, i can keep the extra one then for an spare just incase

Do you have a decoupler? If not be careful, I've read in several places that more than 2-4mm difference in circumference between tires will be bad for your VC if driven on road. I can't give you a source now, got to search for it but I'm leaving for Scotland in half an hour, I'll have a look later if i get the time. You should be fine off road on loose surfaces thought.

Surely it would be best, if there were 2 new ones, to put one front one back to make up for any overall difference front to rear... Then swap them around.

Just measured the depth, and theres about 10mm left.

Was the outcome of tyre shaving? has anyone done it?

I dont have a decoupler and would rather not risk the vc, more tempted to buy set of steels/tyres for the time being,

I had one done a few years ago now, outcome was a shaved tyre.

Although the machine they used it actually almost burns the surface rather than shaving, my treads were 4-5mm down, so couldn't risk the difference, this was long before decouplers were available on the market as well.

Trouble might be finding a place that does it!

I am sure remoulds have a maximum recommened speed and I am sure it is nowhere near 75mph. Someone out there will know.

I would never buy remoulds our lives are too precious. The two things I would never skimp on are tyres and brakes as they are all there is between us and death!

Buy two new tyres and put them on the front! If you have 10mm left on the old ones the difference wont be much at all.
