Stuck tappet noise - 2.1 DJ

Post by PetenAli »

Hi All,

I'd be grateful for a bit of advice please. I have an intermittent sticking tappet. It seems to start when, as recently, I've not driven the bus much and for the last fortnight I have done little more than move it up and down the drive. It has started again just now when I fired it up for the first time for a few days. This is the first time for about 6 weeks. If I take it out for a good run and get it fully warmed up the noise will probably disappear.

I seem to remember someone on here (?Silverbullet) talking about getting rid of this problem with a change of type of oil. I change my oil (and filter) every six months regardless of mileage (we don't do a very high mileage). Currently it has Castrol GTX 15W - 40 for High Mileage engines. Is there a better oil to use - I recall that Brickwerks sell the original VW 15-40 (VW themselves don't list it any more)

As ever, all advice gratefully received.

Thanks,

Pete

PS Hope this is OK going on the Syncro forum - no doubt it will get moved if not.

Dont worry they all do it, the tappets settle down on their own after driving 10 miles or so. My first van used to do it alot.

Changing the tappet initial setting may help, I am going to do this on my WBX which also does this from time to time. It is worst if you just have the engine running for a short time, ie moving the syncro around on the drive, or turn the engine off after a good thrash. it does no harm, just sounds awful.

I may do a jed stylee video of the procedure.

Thanks Simon and Jed. As I hoped. I'll give it a good run later - that should do it.

I for one would be interested in your "how to" on this Simon. I have learnt a lot about WBXs from your posts and its much appreciated. :ok

Cheers,

Pete

Hi Peter, Mine has moments of this from time to time but mostly in winter.a quick drive down the road always sorts it. My old original engine did it as does the new recon one....guess it's just what they do!
in too deep to quit now....

My first Syncro did this mainly because I used it very little but a 10 mile drive soon sorted it

My 2.1MV has a cringe inducing stuck tappet if I've only driven round the corner for a couple of days.

I use halfrauds 15w30.

For the record, it wasn't me! I'm running the DG with Drivetec 15W40 from CAF; it's to VW 501 01 and 505 spec.
