Chrome or Painted Hub Caps

Post by Titus A Duxass »

I'm going to be fitting my winter wheels soon and so need to tart them up a bit.
I'm painting the rims white.

Do I go for hub caps in matching brown with the VW picked out in white?

or

Do I cough up for a set of chrome hub caps?

Having owned a 1980s Italian motorcycle I'm more than a bit nervous about chrome, how robust is the chrome plating on the caps that are availble (I won't buy cheap shyte)?

Even the VW chrome ones aren't as good quality as they used to be, better than the Brazilian ones though which rust within a week. There are stainless steel ones out there now, I think Mega bug sell them in the UK. The original painted ones where silver paint the same as the wheels. Never been to keen on body painted hub caps myself, look a bit hippy.

That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid.

That's also my fear but I think there would be too much white if I painted them white to match the wheel.

Silver chrome paint with a clear lacquer over the top would look better.
For my winter wheels I just use full wheel trims from Halfords easier to keep clean.

I painted my rims white a couple of weeks ago and went for the chrome hubs - I'm quite pleased with the result, it's a damn sight better than the tatty wheel trims she was wearing previously.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems but it will p.iss off enough people to make it worth the effort

Buy some plastic wheel trims and put you own VW badge in the middle like I did.

Muchos Grassyarse for the photo.
Way too much chrome so it's the painted option for me.

Nice idea, that way I can leave the wheels as they are in gunmetal/dark silver.

Thanks for the offer.

I sprayed 2 of them white.

As I suspected, there's an awful lot of white.
I will pick out the VW in the centre of the cap and then try one on the bus.
I may be able to get away with a lot of white because there's a lot of brown on the bus.

That is a little too much white I reckon, even for your brown bus! Think it will make the wheels look very small on the bus too. How about doing the caps the same colour as the bus? That may work.
