Prop UJ swapage...
One of my UJ's is shagged on my prop. To change one do you just take the clips out and push the pin out and swap them over or do you need a press or something?

You will need a good, BIG, vice minimum.
And remember to put the knuckle in before you start to p[ress the needle rollers in.
Good luck...

Re: Prop UJ swapage...
there a bit of a fiddle jed. after undoing the circlips you push one end all the way through then you push the other way untill the cross piece can be wiggled out. you actually use the cross piece to push the caps out if that makes sence.

Re: Prop UJ swapage...
Just read Jed's thread on his adventure, and noticed he had to remove his prop due to UJ failure. Am I right in thinking UJ is Universal Joint? Sorry if dumb question

Re: Prop UJ swapage...
One further complication I found when renewing the UJs.
When you buy UJs (from Brickwerks or where-ever) they come with a set of new circlips. My new ones were thinner than the old ones and with these in place there was slackness - ie room for movement of the cups to move across the yoke. Putting a thick and a thin one opposite each other got the right tightness but the joint was obviously off-centre. The bearings obviously need to be centred to get the prop anywhere near balanced and that you can only do this by fitting the right thickness of circlips.
Problem is that only GKN have the clips in various thicknesses and they don't sell sets! I managed to get a 'back-door' set out of them but essentially, to get it done right, it seems you have to go to GKN for a refurb.
If someone wanted to buy 1000 circlips (of one size) I got the impression they might deal.

Well that's a bit "pooh", I need to change one of mine too, cant you use the original ones or are they destroyed in removing them?

Re: Prop UJ swapage...
The old clips can get damaged on removal - it really depends on how well you do/can clean and ease them before trying to remove them. If they're too tight the clips can deform rather than 'spring'.
The other point is that you might find, like I did, that the new bearings need different size (thickness) clips. In my case, halfway between the old thick ones and the new thin ones.

Re: Prop UJ swapage...
I found that changing the inner parts of the UJ didn't always get rid of any vibration, even when the thing had gone totally digital or was loose whereas giving it to GKN to do it always works so......and now Simon does props on exchange refurbished by GKN; it's not the easiest job to do even with a press and when after all your effort the thing isn't smooth you wonder why you bother, in this case I don't anymore, but Simon gets a special yorkshire discount off GKN so is cheaper than me so I don't do them any more, ditto power steering joints, and VCs = Brickwerks
