I'm scared it's the gearbox

Post by hywelhightop »

Hi,

I've recently been around france in my camper and by the end of the journey, a constant and steady click developed. Since then it has got steadily worse and yesterday the gears started to become really heavy to move. The clicking stops when I put the clutch down and to be honest I am at a loss.

I am fairly new to this and would appreciate some help, if I can fix it that would be great as I am fed up of being ripped off by handy mechanics claiming to know all there is to about T25's and then bodge the whole thing.

Please Help

Hi
This noise could be so many different things but I have to say the immediate thought was CV joint (constant velocity joint) or more simply...one of the flexible joints on the rear driveshafts.
The gear changing stiffness could just be a coincidence and the product of many miles of hot driving (gear linkage bushes have dried out) HOPEFULLY.

Thanks for the reply california, but if it's the CV joint would'nt the noise carry on when the clutch is depressed?

If I can put my oar in ...
When clutch is depressed the whole gearbox in still turning at road speed for that gear. Clutch only disconnects gearbox from engine.
CV joints tend to make noise when under some load, eg when cornering sharply in a front wheel drive car.
Not much help but you never know ... !

Our Moggy Minor used to do this, a "tick" in first and revrse, push the clutch down, the noise would appear to vanish, until you listend really hard, then you realised that the noise had just been replaced with a soft metallic "slush" noise. The tick has gotten worse and is now a very loud CLUNK, we need a new gearbox

Is it all gears you get the noise?

Thanks for all of the messages and help, this forum is great!

I checked the van again and reckon it is the CV joint like you said Martin. The gears are a different problem, but I've changed the oil for the gearbox and it seems fine.

Thanks again.

The symptoms for a rear wheel drive CV joint are slightly different as the rears obviously aren't steered....however the noise is the same at low speed and under load..
Hopefully you have this one sussed
