rough starting

Post by BaaaadSlider »

Running a 1989 1.9 watercooled on lpg.
On start up the van is chuddering along like its starved of gas, when i go to change gear it slows right down then speeds up again, after a couple of miles its ok again.
Does anyone have any ideas please?
I Dont have any mechanical knowledge but my dad can look at any suggestions given
Thanks for looking

Sounds like the vaporisor is freezing up.
When you start it next have a look at the vaporisor and see if it ressembles an iceberg.

Does it do the same when started on petrol, run for a couple of minutes then switched to gas?

Sorry i have been so long in updating this thread just had one thing after another.
Right no ice anywhere on system, wont start on petrol but it will run once you have run on gas for about 5 minutes.
So is there anything else i can check? also noticed, dunno if its a seprate thing or connected, but the oil seems to be a little thinner than normal when i checked to see if it needed topping up :?
Thanks

the thinner oil could be down to it being warm at the moment (ie outside temp as opposed to engine temp) check the fuel filter and the ickle filter in the carb might be bunged up and only once engine is hot will it allow fuel in?

The oil doesn't smell of petrol does it ?!

If the pump diaphragm is failing it may dump petrol into the oil thinning it down ? Immediate attention required !

The pump still has petrol going to it even when it's running on gas, the electric shut-off solenoid (with the manual over-ride lever on it) prevents pumped fuel reaching the carb.

Thanks for all your help and advise, after speaking to mocki hes talked me through taking the wires off the solenoid and trying the system (not a big job i know, but knowing where everything is helps-yes i am blonde lol). Im thinking after the tests done that it is the solenoid so am going to get this checked out later today. In the meantime its an oil change and oil fliter change time for me :ok
thanks again :D

Bit of an update, solenoid checked out to be working ok, so have just ordered a new fuel pump to see if that stops the dual fuel problem.
Thanks for all your help everyone and to mocki for having a look for me :ok
