DIY RnR Bed? Interior Advice

Post by Furgonzo »

Hi all. I have begun the interior stage of my vanny resto and am looking for some advice. The previous owner had the brilliant idea to gorilla glue some blasphemous brown carpeting on TOP of the original side panels and then proceeded to smoke a carton a day with the windows rolled up...a bad combination  . I have managed to get the smell out by removing ALL and giving her a deep scrub, but the panels are useless and I have found some excellent oak paneling that I have cut to size, using the old cards as templates. My problem is where the panels mount - on all except the sliding door panel, on the top there is a channel that the cards fit under...I can't figure out how an original panel fit without showing the channel...? I would like to remove the channel but it seems spot welding/pressed into place in various spots. Just wondering if anyone has experience dealing with these buggers. I plan to mount with panels with showy self tappers visible from the outside and need the wood flush with the body. Also of note is that I have no access to power where I am working, so my handy dremel isn't an option.

Also am looking for suggestions on DIY wood RnR bed frame. I don't have access to hinges here in Chile and shipping is outrageous bringing them in from Europe or the US. I tried to access the plans on Wiki, but the page wouldn't load. Anyone have plans or pix of their jobbie they could share?

Thanks!

I have used the hinges from a futon sofa bed to make my RnR bed. If you want, check out my build and you can see how I have managed it. :ok

i took them trim things off. grab the end with some grips and pull it towards you and where it bends is a spot weld then i just hammered a sharp chisel parallel with them to take em off.they come away really easily. once you get on a roll it literally takes 30 secs to get each of em completely off.

Thanks for the suggestions. I went the way of bigspud and eased them off with some vice grips. I didn't have a chisel, but drilled the heads of the
welds off carefully (not through the metal!) and then filed it down smooth. She's looking nice now and panels are soon ready for install... :ok

Any thoughts on sticking some dense foam behind the panels to deaden some sound and maybe insulate a little? There's that 4 or 5" of space between the inside/outside that feels like it wants something stuck in there. But then maybe there's some deeper purpose for dead space there that I'm missing?

Thanks again!
