Porr starting when hot

Hi all,
My 2.1i starts first time every time when cold. When at normal running temp., it takes two or three goes. When hotter than that, it won't start at all-totally dead, no misfires or anything, unless left for five or ten minutes, when it's back to normal.
The engine was a VW rebuild 40k miles ago, peripherals pretty old except HT leads which are two-three years old. Plugs and cap are not new but should be OK.
Also has rough tickover but otherwise performs really well, fast and smooth.
Any ideas?
