New Head Gasket-Brown Smoke/No Start.

Post by Furgonzo »

Hello. I am at the tail end of my first head gasket replace on my 1.7 KY vanny and got it all back together today. Oil changed and coolant drained and I'm in the process of bleeding it now. I tried to fire it up and it turns over, though it feels like its turning "hard" and it's belching an ugly brown, smoggy smoke. It fires up after some chugging but stalls immediately. Does this sound like a timing issue? How do you know when the tension is right on the timing belt if you don't have the magic tool? All my marks were lined up, after several tries, though I struggled to get the tensioner on without moving everything else. I have no reference manual and am a newbie on the diesel. Any help is huge!! Thanks...
