Re: T4 syncro- low 1st gear wanted
sorry I don't do the T4 boxes so don't know what is possible, but someone on the T4 forum might know - I have had a couple of enquiries from T4 owners who thought it was just a case of fitting our G gear
I asked them for more details and heard nothing back

Thanks Aidan,
which information do you need?
please, tell me a list of things you need to know
I will look at ETKA and another technical stuff that I have

Re: T4 syncro- low 1st gear wanted
ok looking at the exploded parts diagram the 1st change gear is driven by the propshaft (layshaft/input shaft as was) so to change the ratio you would need a bespoke propshaft and a bespoke change gear, which I guess is what Seikel have had made and hence the cost - unless you have access to a cheap gear and shaft maker then it won't be cheaper elsewhere.
The T3 gearbox features a reduction gearset and idlers which then turn the R and G gears and give us our lower ratio for those gears, which we need due to the lower power of our engines, we have mechanical difflocks because ABS wasn't very advanced back then, nowadays 4motion and the like (LandRover HDS etc, the new PorscheCayenne transmission et al) use clever ABS to limit wheelspin and maintain traction and they are amazingly good at it (as Mick reports with the Freelander elsewhere and I've witnessed Disco with that technology be awesome) but if the electronics or hydraulics fail then you are stuffed either in situ or in the wallet to fix it
That's why the T3 Syncro is such a good vehicle choice, capable within it's limitations, able to be modified within limits, and relatively cheap and easy to fix as well as having all the T3 benefits of space and rear engine with, for it's age, good built in safety and strength
downside is easy to break into, and steal and age related corrosion, low power and by modern standards poor fuel economy and higher speed handling

Re: T4 syncro- low 1st gear wanted
Thanks again Aidan,
yes... Seikel changes ring and pinion:
http://www.vw-offroad-seikel.de/de/prod ... kel-vw-t4/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
(open sheet label "Antrieb")
from a serie relation of 74:15=4.93 to a 79:13=6,08
this means that with 1st gear (relation 43:10) the lowest translation is 26,13, quite good and not so far away from some T3 syncro 14" with "G" gear (4,57*6.028=27,56)
I love T3 syncro, but I want ABS, Airbags, Air Aconditioned, fuel economy, 130 km/h ...
Hopefully, I have a 100% rear mechanical differential lock and EDS in front.
So, the only way is going to Seikel garage... with a lot of €€€
And now, they don´t offer the longer 5th gear to compensate the shortened differential... it´s a shame!
Well, I´m very pleased with your attention.
Daniel
PD: excuse my bad english and mistakes

Daniel, thanks for this, I hadn't looked at the Seikel site before, tbh that's not a bad price, but without the longer fifth it would only really suit in more extreme conditions than european motorways
