So I bought myself this van...

Post by mikey »

...and so far am loving it. 1.9 petrol, 4 gear, 1986, 90k miles with excellent condition original beautiful brown interior apart from a couple of poppers missing on the curtains, and one cup missing from the crockery. No visible rust, although there are signs that some of the seams have been treated at some point.

First one I've had, so I found my way here and have got a few questions which you good folk might be able to help me with...

1) As you can see, the Autosleeper strip on the front is in a bit of a state although all others are fine. Can I get hold of a replacement anywhere? If not, what can I do to repair it?

2) I realise that looking after the van yourself is part of the fun, but I don't have the skills or time to do much more than basic maintenance. Can anyone recommend a good garage, reachable from east London, that can do all the hard work if necessary?

3) Got an agreed value insurance policy for the purchase price (£4.5k). Is it worth getting a proper valuation, or is that a fair price? Alternatively, did I get ripped off?

Thanks in advance - see you on the road.

Don't know if you can get a replacement but the decal should come off with some patience and a hair drier to soften the adhesive.

As for the decal you can't repair it ...I have an Autosleeper and in my opinion they are the finest conversions that AS did.
I have had the Autosleeper decals removed and replaced them with my own. As I have the conversion authentic paper work, the livery dosn't matter.
I tried to obtain decals for the hightop but to no avail.
A local graphics shop could eventualy reproduce them but at a huge cost.
as it was a one off.
brickwerks has reproduced various decals for devon etc, but not sure if Autosleeper has been tackled yet.
Good luck!

I would try a local signwriter ask for advice.... or a local graphic sign producer

Hi new auto sleeper owner.

I got my first vw camper (autosleeper 89) last month and I love it! Mine has the same livery as yours and the same problem in that some of it is missing. With mine the Burgundy Stripe along the side is painted on. According to Autosleeper this was the case with the older vans but the thin Gold and White lines running through it are glued on. Auto sleeper can supply these. I have searched for a paint match and the closest I have found is a Rover colour Damask Red so it looks like I will be needing a steady hand and a calm day! to fix-up mine. Good luck with yours and if you find another way of doing it please let me know.

Great site btw.

Sandringham.
