Post by oldiguana »

eyup ducks, took the camel for its first nip out today since buying her,its got a 1.9 n/a diesel in,the 1.6 was in a crate in the back when we had her, anyway i took her out this morning for a run and when i get to 45 it really need to change to another gear, engine has loads of grunt im well chuffed except it only does 45,anyone got any suggestions, what gearbox will fit my purpose, ive seen a post which says a 2.0 Aircooled box may do or do i need a 1.6td box or a 1.9 diesel or 1.9 petrol box?,im absolutely stumped but marlady goes newquay in it in 6 weeks so i need to act quickly.all advice would be greatfully recieved and a reasonably priced suitable gearbox will be even more gratefully recieved.................HELP ME OBI-WAN-KENOBI,YOU ARE MY ONLY HOPE! :(

the pump arm isn't catching on the deck lid is it ?
bearing in mind that a 1.6n/a will do 65ish on a 4 speed box

no duck, pump arm is fine, but i did actually under exagerate because i would ideally need to change gear at around 40-45 there was just nothing left at 45,it had vertually revved itself out(obviously this was its first nip out after standing for 6 years with no engine in,and i hope to never have to thrash it,)dreadfull, will be absolutely great for round town but useless on the d-road(dual carriageway)and the motorway is a definate nono.whats all this about 2.0 Aircooled box will it give me a better cruising top end and will it fit staright on and lastly do i need the linkage?gearstick etc

Need to know the rpm at which it revs out, and the wheel and tyre size and the code off your present gearbox to move forward logically...

Like O'Tickman says, it should really do at least 65 at about 4000 rpm...

Transaxle code, should be on the shiny bit on this photo (might need a wire brush a cloth with degreaser).

A clue might be that its got a 1.9 n/a, an uncommon re-engining choice!
And it almost sounds like you're not in top gear at that speed, sure there isn't a 5-speeder fitted already :?: Silly, I know :x

65mph on a long downhill section with a following wind and a great deal of leaning forward going "c'mon girl, you can do it, c'mon"

There is something major amiss there..
there are no ratios in the std box (s) that would allow only 45 in top...
are the wheels/tyres a non standard size on the front or back? not even if it was a completely different box..

as said.. box code would help a lot.

I suppose someone could have changed the ratios for whatever reason, but that would be mad and again virtually impossible with std parts..

There is indeed, and we need some better facts, revs would be good as well, do diesels not all have revcounters?

Sounds like 3rd gear to me, or 4th in a 5 speed box even... or the engine is really being overgoverned

I run a sorted 1.6n/a, on the flat 55 max in 4th 65ish in 5th, so 10 to 15mph more, but it hasnt revved out at that as it just dont have enough go.
Tailwind or down hillish then I chicken out before 80.

purple chug you must have a prob if thats all your getting?

ive got a 1.9 in a 1.6 van, it does rev high at 60 but not revved out, its not screaming or anything. i will be changing the ratio soon though by getting wider tyres on bigger rims 16" or similar!!

Weazlechin, of course even on 16's if they're significantly lower profile tyres than now they might not make as much diff. as you might think, but don't take this the wrong way, I'm sure you'll check the comparative Rolling Circumfs (TRC) first

i do actually think that the term"flat out" should not have been used,as i dont particularly enjoy caining engines these days, flat out to me is probably around 3,500-3750 revs,:roll:sounds silly i know but i must be getting old,and narladys golf sounds like its on its dying breath whenever its around 65-70 mph....my main gripe is that the previous owner(s) had 2 or 3 engines in my van in the 6 years leading up to its demise in 2000,so i was hoping to get at least 5 years top fuel camping in her all over europe, but i am assuming that the gearing was the cause of the engines giving way ...............??????????????????????????????????????

if the tyre is of a higher circumference the less wheel revolutions per km eg "lower revs) a 195/ 80/16 will turn less times than a 195/80/14 when rolled over any distance. i had a pickup truck with 185/14s on due to a bad diff ratio, it screamed at 60mph, i put 205s on it and noticed about 10 to 15 mph difference at the same revs
