Steering lock replacement

Hi All,
Day one of my 2 week camping trip and I managed to fubar my ignition barrel . A very nice man in a yellow van rigged it up so I could hot wire it and continue with my holiday .
Now I am back I have tried to remove barrel as described in previous posts (ie drill 3mm hole) but still can't seem to get the bugger out. As my steering lock doesn't seem to work either I wondered if it might be easier to replace the whole lot. I have seen replacements on ebay for about £15, plus another £10 for barrel and keys.
I can't see any mention in Haynes manual or Wiki on how to do this.
Is it fairly straight forward or will it be best to let my local garage deal with it
Hope someone can help.

It's been a while since my last one so...from memory, the key needs to be inserted for the steering lock 'bolt' to retract allowing barrel removal.
Like i say...thats what I remember so if you can't get the key in things become more complicated like column removal......

Damn drat and double drat. Can't get key in. Think it may be a job for the garage.

if the steering lock is unlocked then it should come off, and I guess it must be in the unlocked position if you have been driving it, I can't believe the AA would have let you drive with it jammed like that, if it had locked and caused a crash they would have had some liabilty

I perhaps stupidly removed key when I got back from holiday as didn't want to leave van on drive with key in ignition. I am now unable to get back in and need to take van to garage Tuesday. As far as I know steering lock is buggered anyway, but is there any easy way of disabling (just in case) as don't want to drive and it suddenly engage.
