Oil level reading

Post by Dandy »

Hi All

I seem to be stumped by the most basic thing.

Just got van, air cooled 2l, and am having difficulty reading dipstick. Everything is running ok, no warning lights, pulls fine, sounds ok etc., but when I checked the oil there was obvious evidence of oil right at the bottom of the dipstick (below the curl) but the overall level seemed to be below the min mark. I topped up with about a litre and now there seems to be blobs of oil at the very bottom and at the top (just above the top curl).

I am a little confused. Was it low before? Have I now over filled it? What can I do if I have?

Is this just q quirk of T25 ownership, or am I just failing in the most basic of mechanical tasks?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

1) Park the van on the flat
2) Switch off engine and go and make a cup of tea.
3) Come back remove dipstick and wipe clean with clean rag.
4) Push dipstick back in.
5) Remove dipstick and check level.

I keep my oil level on the max mark and check it every few weeks. If you have over-filled it, the easiest way to get the extra oil out is a cheap suction pump down the dipstick hole.

I've been having the same, very simple problem.

If mine is anything to go by, you don't have enough oil in it - keep going until it's obvious on the central flat part of the stick (maybe clean the stick up with some sandpaper or something to make it less oil coloured.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Ordered stuff for oil change anyway, just so that I know I am starting from scratch.

It has always been so obvious on all of the other vehicles I have owned.
