I thought i read a few years ago engine builder laurie p saying it was possible to run solid tappets on a hydraulic cam but not hydraulic ones on a cam ment for solid lifters hence the reason i ask as if its not just a myth was going to ditch the hydraulics.

Actually hydro's work really well on quite a few "solid" cams.. BUT.. type 4 engines are a bit different.. is it the stock cam and why do you want to get rid of the hydros?
if all tappety then what oil are you using?? they dont like stuff under 15w40 and any of the petrols seem to prefer 20w50 if a bit tired..

The reason i want to get shot of them is all the other Aircooled T1,T2,T4s ive had or worked on have had solid lifters and never gave any problems, i dont mind spending 30mins every 2,500miles on a tappet reset. I have a good used set of solids for a type4 motor that will be going in a spare CU engine that will be getting a cam change later but wanted to know if i could fit them to the CU thats in my van at the moment to try a quick fix to not miss our holiday.
