AAAAGHHHH!!!!! I have just spent the last 4 hours draining my cooling system. I had to change the expansion tank as it had a crack, so thought that only option was to drain and refill.
Van is 88 1.6td and used the jk manual on turbo diesel, following instrutions to the letter (very different from haines petrol)
heater control to hot
expansion tank top remove
disconnect hose at pump & connection pipe
drain
reconnect hoses
open bleed screw
fill expansion tank
start engine
Problem is, I put in only 2 litres of antifreeze ant then tank was full, then started engine to idle and waited for the level to go down and kept checking the bleeder. The level didn't go down and nothing came out of bleeder.
The thing that really confuses me though is that the system is suppose to take 16 litres!!
I then had a look at the haines petrol manual and saw that the bleeder was opened before refilling, so I then drained the system again using that method. Suffice to say, that did not work either. Lots of coolant came out with the drain, but again, the tank only took a couple of litres.
Are there any other drain points that I need to know about?
Or does it just take an age to 'suck' the coolant into system?
Cheers

Can take around 20 mins for engine to get warm I know that much. Not sure about the turbo but there are two bleed points (on at top of rad and one in engine bay. I followed the tips in the wikipedia on here and it worked a treat. I would imagine that the thermostat isn't opening - either cos engine simply not hot enough or its faulty or just stuck and if coolant isn't moving then you won't get much in it
Wikipedia does suggest squeezing coolant pipes to encourage movement/air out.
