Get a van with a diesel engine in it, that way you wont have to cast around for the diesel bits.

I would have thought 5K would get you a van that didn't need doing up, so you would sorta hope that it would also do as a budget for a project.

for 5 grand you will get a "MINTER". keep looking on ebay, and if you want more for your money, look on (ebay.de) tavel to germany and bring one back, i paid £1600 for a diesel westfalia (including ferry tickets/easyjet etc) i looked in autotrader last week and the same westys are £4 grand here.

Yup, start with a good 1.6TD if you really want to take out that much of loan - would suggest a bit less as a starting budget... don't buy the 1sty one you come across unless it ticks ALL the boxes.

AAZ is an IDI TD, not a Tdi. Tdi (Direct-Injetced) has somewhat restricted rev-range, the Indirect Injected engines (Ricardo's Comet pre-chamber type) will pull over a wider range. Tdi is good but expensive, more complicated and getting the gearing right more critical.
