Diffapointed

Post by Roving Rich »

So my day off work was a bit of a non event as the diff I was gonna put turned out to be a dit dodgy IMO.

Image

So the speedo drive has been removed with a blunt implement me finks. The internal pin has been broken off and glued back into place with araldite.
My concern is that it would come adrift in some far flung land get flung around by the VC and destroy the housing. I don't think its worth the risk to fit it.

The outside that hold the speedo drive in place has also been mullered

So there is nothing left to hold the roll pin.

So I got on the phone to Sycro Spares and Jon kindly agreed to let me send it back and swap it out for another.
The end had been sealed with cardboard and tape, so neither of us had spotted the damage.
So it will be a bit more of a wait before I can get it re-assembled and on the road in 4WD.

So anybody got got some got tips on howto get the speedo drive out ?
I've removed the roll pin and just hosed it down with WD40 for now. It doesn't look easy without damaging the alloy somewhere ?

Cheers

either use the remains of an old speedo cable or do it under the van, the cable will just reach, once the roll pin is out screw the speedo cable back on untill the speedo spins in case then use a pry bar against the back of the big nut and it should pop out ok
I have a tool for the slide hammer but this method works on all but most corroded
the speedo float stop pin isn't under any real load so well done epoxy repair should hold fine
I have good non locker case machined for locker in stock so the internals can be transferred to a good case

Thanks Aiden your a star !
I'll give that a go when the diff returns.
I have a spare case with locker that came with the van - but think swapping the internals might be bit challenging. Sounds like end float needs to be pretty accurate and I don't have the equipment to measure it let alone adjust it ! I'd love to have a go, but its probably best left to the experts such as yourself.

Araldite is actually very strong when used right, my dad glued a cracked head on a 400+ hp v8 back when he was" young and stupid# (his words) and it lasted for years...

Yup, araldite certainly has its uses, but the jaunty angle put me off. Id do it as an emergency repair, but sooner or later its gonna give. sods law says that'd be in the middle of the Gobi desert or summit !
Yup tried lots of places for a diff everyone i could find in the UK and a number across europe to no avail. Syncro spares had several off the shelf.( apparently CJ was lkie the grim reaper for Syncro's)
Jon is reasonable Chap. He does very good work, from what I can see poking around his workshop Its top notch. He is clearly trying to make ago of the business and I'm sure the unit he rents aint cheap. So he is working hard trying to make a living like the rest of us. I'm a reasonably competent self taught mechanic. I wouldn't dream of spending thousands with a garage getting my Syncro up to scratch as I'm quite capable of doing it myself. I don't think I bought the best Syncro going. I need to get it on the road/off the road ? To Justify spending thousands on a rusty 1980's van ! Plus I learn alot along the way. So if I ever realise the dream of some international travel with it. I can fix it if I get into trouble. The more I know about how they work the better IMHO.
Hopefully I can continue to improve it, get the gearbox off to Aiden for tweaks, new springs..the list seems to go on. But for now just getting it 4wd and using it is the aim.

This won't necessarily help you, but I also had the roll pin housing crumble away on my front diff. I made up this steel bracket to retain the speedo drive.

Nice Job - I'll see when the next one arrives.
It was that pin working loose inside and rattling around the VC that scared me most.
